A former President of the US helped me to appreciate that words can have several meanings...such as the word "is."

So in this case what does the word "one" mean?

The price was too good to pass up and i still have enough in the "SML Fund" to add mods or save for my dream 45cal SML.

Ive wanted to try a 45cal SML for a long time to see if i like it. Its a huge beast though and will likely be a range queen. I already have a OEM laminate i can swap and Boyds sells a nice lighter laminate TH stock for well under $200. Its nearly a drop in and only minor barrel channel inletting is needed.

Choate has two hideous "Varminter" stocks and a guy at the local shows sells them for $160. They are nearly a straight drop in and bed on solid aluminum blocks but leaves the barrel totally floating. Ugly as sin but they would make a nice range queen stock and really soak up the recoil of a 200gr at 2800fps. :D

Im not a big Savage fan either but they are strong and easy to swap barrels. Ive hardly shot mine and almost entirely with a 325gr FTX. It loves that load and the extra weight makes it tolerable.

They are however a easy way to get into a 45cal SML with the least amount of smith work but it makes them even heavier. The Rem conversions are the rage now and Savage conversions are selling at fair prices atm. I certainly wont lose any money on this deal and i dont have to wait 8-14 weeks for a barrel. I also want to try some heavy BH209 sabotless loads but i want to try it in a barrel that has been tested to at least 3 times the potential PSI. Pacnor 45s made for Dougs board are rated at 120K PSI or higher.

The deal has been agreed to by the seller and i should get it next week. :barmy:

You really should look into the SMI option for yours. They use a Douglas barrel which i prefer (so far) and if you don't mind waiting you can get other twists. They stock at least 1-32 and 1-36 barrels for under $500 and are the fastest way to get a conversion. Converting a 45/70 barrel is even faster but those are usually a 1-20 twist. Most of those reviews are very positive and you can still shoot BH209 very reliably. I think Slufoot on Dougs board also convert the 45/70s with a Savage breach plug and his work is great for $150.

My next barrel for is going to be short - probably 20-22" but for sure not longer than 24". I don't need a long barrel when I'm walking through the woods. I had originally planned on a TC Katahdin barrel, but maybe just a 45-70 barrel converted would be fun. The faster twist might be kind of fun.

Stoppit!!! Your beginning to sound like a politician. :confused0024:

Gotta admit I am not familiar with this piece. It looks good and I would think can shoot good also.

Have fun and good luck with your new toy. :happy0001:

Its on the way and there is a gun show this weekend with the vendor that carries the ugly stock i want to try out.

I hate waiting on the truck and when it arrives at work, i have to wait even longer until lunch to look at it. :p

I know the feeling. Waiting is the worst part. I have a Vision on a UPS truck somewhere . Gotta love that tracking number .at least you can check the progress and know it's getting closer and closer.the best part is when you check and it says on truck out for delivery. Yippee 

Turns out it wont fit a Savage with a bolt release from the trigger guard screw. Probably end up with a nice Boyds TH laminate after i remove the camo. I got to handle one of those tonite on another rifle and i really liked it.

You should check Dougs, a guy just got one done and another is doing one soon. One used a T/C 45/70 1-20 barrel with SMIs plug for the conversion and its shooting great with a peppy load in a 24". Anything shorter will give up a lot if you want smokeless. You can still manage 2400fps easily but the muzzle flash will get nasty if you go much higher in a 20".

Another guy has the full SMI slower twist 45 and one of the other guys is taking him to the range to see how it does with the Douglas barrel. They will also use a Savage plug for the conversion if you wish.
