the CVA & Traditions though will shoot Blackhorn209 :D

I do like that stock on the knight though. That looks like it would be a comfortable set up.

With a LK 209 conversion you could too but i wouldn't. :p

I will be keeping my eye on that Optima though and the cost. If its lower than the Traditions, i might just try one.

I looked at the Traditions for awhile, but I decided I don't want to have to clean the ported barrel. I've heard that plastic fouling isn't very much fun to clean out of ports.

Im not sold on porting with sabots either. IMO its just another thing that is hard to clean and a ML with subs just doesn't make enough pressure once the bullet reaches the muzzle to get the full benefit from porting. Almost no SMLs made for sabots use porting either, its a bit more common in the smaller caliber sabotless customs. Those are shooting well into CF speeds and pressures.

Plus it makes them VERY loud. My 1895 45/70 GG with porting is brutally loud and Marlin even stopped using it because there was almost no benefit.

Im not aware of any common 45/70 ammo loaded today with 70gr of any powder. I highly doubt it would effectively burn more than 60gr even with a big conical.

That might have a nice thump to it.

I'm thinking of the original 45/70 load. It was black powder.

Gm54-120 08-14-2011 08:54 AM

Yes and actually they had two main military loads. One was a 400gr or larger bullet and 70gr of BP. The other was a "cavalry" load with 50gr IIRC and a lighter bullet. :D

Personally i would rather have a modern inline pistol in 45cal and shoot a conical in the 330-360gr range with a 14" barrel with that QRBP or 12" with the old style plug. I would be using Swiss or real BP anyway for hunting so BH209 compatibility wouldn't be an issue. I found a Howdah 50cal locally i can get for $399 that is very lightly used and mint condition. Then i would have 2 shots and its a beautiful pistol. :D

Another quality inline hunting pistol is the Kahnke that has a conventional external hammer and uses #11 and musket caps. It has a 1 in 26" twist, a really sweet trigger and can also be fitted with multiple barrels of choice in .36, .45, .50 & .54. Click on the brochure tab located at the top of the home page to see a PDF brochure about it.

Here's one. It's a little expensive though. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/c....aspx?a=873686
