Hoppes smells horrible, probably due to the Kerosene in it lol.. yes stinky!
I've even heard of a cologne coming out that will smell like Hoppe's. Which is a banana smell. When I go to my bench to work on a gun, or reload etc. I open the cap of Hoppe's to put the proper smell in the air. Stinky...............sissy. |
cant stand the smell of hoppes or the blackhorn cleaners. Used to make me sick to my stomach and make me light headed afterward. Bore Scrubber for me as well.

I have tested Montana X-Treme Bore Conditioner in I believe all my inlines and never experienced what would be 1000fps less on the first shot. What I do know is if you use too much it will seep into your breech and into your frame. A few drops is all it takes to treat the bore. A good thing to do after swabbing it out is to snap a few primers to clear it out of the plug but I have even forgot to do that and the first shot hit true.
Another product that will keep your first shot with #2 and #3 is Loc Ease Graphite lubricant. It actually dries fast and leaves a protective graphite film in the bore. I just dry swab it out before firing also. This is the first I have ever heard of a claim of Montana X-Treme causing first shot fps to be extremely low. A lot of my first shots through the Chrony is me getting it positioned correctly. I just used Montana X-Treme in my smokeless 700ML and shots 1,3 and 4 were touching. Just my .02 cents though. |
That may well have been the issue of having too much in the bore and contaminating the powder. But even in the short time between loading and firing, 1000 fps seems like an awful lot of velocity loss.

Not too much in the bore, too much seeped through the flash hole and into the flash channel of the breechplug. The Triumph has a long flash channel to be contaminated. One thing I have learned from Sabotloader is when I do any swabbing at all the breech is open to force the air on the downstroke to be forced out the breechplug. If I am shooting my Knight its easy to just leave the bolt open. If shooting one of my break actions I just leave it open when swabbing. The air being forced through will also leave the flash hole open. Thanks Mike.

There was a long thread on another forum about Hoppe's. The overwhelming majority loved to smell of Hoppe's.
