Default Great Plains rifle build

A friend bought a new lyman great plains .54 for me to build for him. We worked out a color theme and once it arrived here today i started working on it. Ran into some trouble but ended up getting it fixed perfectly and so now thats out of the way!

Did a great deal of stock work on it today, but have a little file finishing to do on the nose cap to get some slightly clearance thats needed.

Got a great start on the thumb hook in the wrist of the stock as well.

Once the wood is all finished or at least roughed into shape and smoothed, i'll move onto the steel. Ordered all my stuff last week so hopefully by the end of this week or early next week i will have my supplies in.

I'll upload some pics tonight

Heres Jono GPR .54! Its just working and shaping the wood right now. The bore got 80 strokes of JB Bore Paste and so that's out of the way as well.

Adding a bit of bees wax to the wedge key plate screws. If you dont lube them, they will snap off as soon as you introduce some torque to the tiny head.

Getting my big horse hoof file, i started to slim down the rear end of the stock as well as the bottom where the toe plate is located. Made easy work but slow as i had to be careful. Followed up by a wood block wrapped with 60 grit sand paper.

Roughing out the thumb hook,

Finished but needs final sanding and some slight shaping around the sides.

And lil ol handsome me 8)

Ever build one from scratch? Its quite an experience. I built 3 to a set of plans for a Hawken that I got from the St Lois Museum Browned and finished with Tung nut oil like the originals.

yeah years ago, made the stock myself out of a 2x12. Pretty rough, especially the barrel inletting but still shot good and killed many rabbits with that .36

I swear though, that .36 was horrible on rabbits. Used to shoot them and gut them all in one smooth shot. They basically exploded LOL.

That stock has some great grain in it. Can't wait to see the completed photos.

That's coming along real nice Devil.

In that last picture - is that thing you have the gun resting on some sort of scarecrow you use to keep animals out of the garden?

Hello there Winterly. Welcome to the Black Powder forum. Do you have any muzzleloaders?
