Bad news from eye doctor
 

Went for my regular eye check- up today. while I was there i asked the doc about an issue I have been having while shooting. it seems that when I am looking down range with my glasses on I see fine, but when I look through the scope target is blurry. I was hoping an adjustment in my prescription would be the answer, or perhaps a prescription just for shooting. Doc says no dice, it is a function of age and how your eye loses its ability to focus, i'm bummed. Have any of you guys had this experience? Maybe my doc is full of it.

are you near or far sighted? I'm near sighted and have worn glasses since I was 13 but now that I"m in my forties I wear progressive lenses to see close as well...yea your eyes don't focus as you get older. Without glasses I see in focus about 8-10 inches in from of me...that's it...eyes will no longer focus close up...seeing far isn't an issue since I"ve needed glasses for that for 30years...

Yes, I had the issue. Now i'm blind in that eye, and had to learn to shoot left handed.

I never used a scope until just recently. I don't understand your problem. Just focus the scope to your eyesight, and it's not going to effect your vision without the scope. Glasses or no glasses. What am I missing?

I can't seem to adjust the focus ring to sharpen the target with my glasses on. I checked with Leupold, their answer was that i might not be able to get the sharp image I'm looking for. It's the glasses that affect my vision through the scope. Did I explain it any better?

If you want to take a chance with the purchase of another scope (about $40 with the Midway/Simmons rebate) I'd bet you can get a clear focus with the Simmons 4X ProDiamond with its quick focus eyepiece. I can get a clear picture with or without my glasses with a twist of the eyepiece - just like the eyepiece adjustment on binoculars. It has a lot more adjustment than my Leupold VX-II or VX-III.

Ok, I understand. You can't focus with your glasses on, but you can with them off, and you want to avoid that.

You probably could with the cheap Simmons scope that Semi suggested, but i'm sure you wouldn't be satisfied compared to a Leupold. For $40 you can't beat the Simmons, but it's still a $40 scope. Pretty fuzzy on the edges.

well maybe it's the scope...if you can see fine with your glasses then it shouldn't be a problem...

My thinking exactly. With glasses on I see fine, real sharp and clear. Until I focus the back end of the scope I see fuzzy. But just a slight adjustment, and all is fine. I am not sure what to tell you. I am no eye doctor. But without my glasses, the animals in the woods would be safe from me.

You should be able to focus the scope to whatever glasses you are wearing...The doctor is wrong...He is talking about losing you close vision which is why so many of us older gentlemen keep a set of reading glasses handy...This has nothing to do with not being able to focus the scope with your glasses on...Many of us can't shoot open sights anymore but can shoot with a scope...Either your lenses on your scope are scratched, fogged up or the adjustment ring isn't doing it's thing...

Seems to me you are looking through your magnifiers on the bottom of your glasses when you look through the scope. The bottom part of your glasses are intended for close up viewing. If you would concentrate on looking through the upper part of your glasses when sighting through the scope you should be OK. Perhaps you have industrial glasses with the magnifiers on the top too?

If your glasses allow you to see far away OK, they should also allow you to see the cross hair clearly. You 'see' (pun intended) the cross hair image inside the scope is at infinity, as is the image of the target. If you can see the target with your glasses out aways, then you should also be able to see the target and the cross hair inside the scope clearly. If not, something is wrong with your scope, and it probably should be replaced. Perhaps you could have someone else look through your scope, to verify it is not working correctly.

One option you may consider, is to have a pair of glasses made without bifocals. These glasses you could use for hunting, and at the range sighting through your scope. Your issues looking through your scope should be readily and easily cured, so that you can enjoy shooting and hunting.
