Nice rifle. Makes me want to try a Flintlock. Great! That's all I need is to start buying Flintlocks now.:eek2:

Dave, Do you have any UC shorts that will slide down that barrel? They seem to shoot great in a 1 in 32 inch twist barrel that I have.

Congrats on the nice rifle.

After I got my first flintlock, it was like a sickness. I just could not believe how fun they were. They are not that easy to figure out, and the speed of the lock will sure bust old wives tales about them. When you first start shooting, I admit that lock does get your attention. But now it goes off and I hardly notice. Lyman makes a really fast flintlock. My trade rifle and this Great Plain are fast, compared to so of the flintlocks I have shot. Although my Traditions Hawkins flintlock is also real good as is my Thompson Centers...

You need one of these. Then you can really spend some money. :)

I shot all of mine off, but thank goodness I own the mold. I am going to have to break out the lead and molds and cast for a day. I am about out of ball, I want more REAL conicals, and I need to cast for the .45 caliber, so that would be a reason to cast up a couple hundred of the UC shorts too... Good idea there!!

I have the Great Plains Hunter in a .54 and it is a powder hog. It loves the Hornady 425 gr conical with 110 gr powder. I never could get great accuracy under a 100 gr. But with a 110 gr and that 425 bullet it dropped a deer at 119 yards and left an exit hole that looked the size of a 50 cent piece. Deer went no where.

thank for the information... I have been trying lighter load. So I will go the other way with it and see what happens.

bronko gave me something to try, so today I used the rear sight like a peep. While it was not the solution, it was better then nothing.



the 460 grain No Excuses started all this off. They showed a little promise when shooting. I did not swab at this time.

I then went to the Lyman Shockers in the upper left bull. Like always, these 420 grain all lead conicals are a shocker. They sprayed all over the place until I dropped the powder charge down to 50 grains of Goex 3f.

I then shot the bottom right bull with some Bufflalo Bullet 375 grain SSBs and 70 grains of the Goex 3f. Again they were doing better then nothing and maybe with some work I can get them to shoot.

The last thing I tried were 385 grain Buffalo Bullet Conicals. They did as they always did, sprayed all over the place.

The rifle was flawless. Ignition excellent. When I cleaned it I did use brake cleaner. When I thought the rifle was clean, I sprayed the barrel insides with brake cleaner then ran some patches. It was still pulling that packing grease from the bore. BUT I think I have it all out now.

Yeah Dave the trick to that method is to remember the sight picture. Like I said, it takes some getting used to.
Now you have my mind wondering. There is a Pedersoli flintlock at the local gun shop on the used rack. Its a 50 cal and more than likely has a slow twist for PRB. I think the price is somewhere in the $200s. Sounds reasonable. I might just have to pick it up.
