Default Ballistic Reticle

Any thoughts on scopes with a Black Powder Ballistic Reticle?

They are nice and I have 3 of them but in all reality if you know your bullets drop from 100 to 200yds it only takes a little Kentucky Windage to make hits.

Aren't they based on 150 grains of powder and a 250 grain bullet. If so that kind of limmits your load options doesn't it?

They are made IIRC for bullets travelling in the 1800-1900fps range. They base that 150 charge on 3 pellets which is not 150gr loose powder. 100gr BH209 will get most 250 and 300gr bullets up to the speed where the reticles will work. You really just have to try it to see how close the reticle is off at 150-200-250yds.

I don't like them. They look too cluttered.

In theory. But in reality, you can pick the load that shoots best then just figure out what yardage the crosshairs match up to. That's what most do.

My thoughts on a BDC ballistics scope is this... if your shots are long shots, and I mean a larger percentage of them are 150 yards plus more so then under that.. they might have a use. Then the BDC would have a use. If like me my average shot is 50 yards or less unless I am on my range.. they are a toy. They are of no use unless your a distance shooter.

Now these people that hunt fields and out west where they shoot 150 yards or more, I would have one of them. But as they said, if you learn the hold over, long shots are not that hard. One afternoon with a 4x scope, I was shooting a white paper plate at 150 yards. I learned that the fat part of the cross hair just had to lay on the top of that paper plate and then fire... it would be in the center area of the plate.

You have to ask.. are they worth the extra money.

I use a simple method, but it depends on having a fast load and an efficient bullet.

I zero at 150 yds. That way I can hold dead on to almost 200 yds.

Just shoot high or low in the kill zone, but never out of it.

Not with a muzzle loader you won't.you can set it dead on at 150 with a muzzy, but at 200 you need to be on the top of shoulder line or above in most cases.ain't like no 270 lol. Ray
