Dipping a stock

That's ridiculous. Things must have really changed. last I heard they were charging a $100.00 to dip a stock, if it was wood they charged about $130.00 because of having to seal the wood first. $500.00 minimum sounds like they don't want to do any work the average Joe anymore. They must be focusing on company jobs .

$100 is not bad to have someone do it for you. The DIY dip kits cost about $90, and there is definitely a decent amount of time involved in the process. And Builder, OF COURSE there is no functional advantage to having your stock dipped in burl figure; it’s purely cosmetic.
Anyway, if you cannot find someone to do it for you for around $100 (cruise the net hard…there are TONS of places that do this stuff now), perhaps you could convince one of those places to sell you a square yard of the actual pattern so you could DIY. All you need to do is prep the stock surface, prime it, apply base coat, dip it (requires activator…not sure where you’d get that by itself), and clear coat it. Maybe the guys here would sell you the 4 spray cans minus the pattern since you don't want a camo pattern: http://www.mydipkit.com/
I’m sure the guys on this forum could help you out with any questions on the process: http://www.liquidconceptsus.com/phpBB3/index.php
Here is a video showing the DIY process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yt6_ur8hybY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB9YtesgL2Y

Actually, this place probably has a wood pattern you'll like: http://www.liquidconceptsus.com/films/wood.html
They don't have pricing for gun stocks, but their price for an electric guitar body is $60, so I can't imagine they'd charge MORE for a gun stock. http://www.liquidconceptsus.com/pricing.html
the site has it's ups and downs...if you can get it to work, there is a pic of a burl wood stock they did in this gallery: http://www.liquidconceptsus.com/gall...sandcases.html
