A White christmas after all
#1
Well having nothing to do today, and it being nice and warm, I decided to shoot. The question was, what rifle did I want to shoot. So I decided to take one that did not require a lot of swabbing, and one that I could shoot fast. That had to mean a White rifle. Besides, its been a long time since I shot them. Also Bull Shop will be sending me a lot more bullets real soon to play with.
Rifle: White Model 97 .451 caliber 22 inch stainless steel barrel
Scope: Bushnell 3200 2-7x32mm with firefly
Projectile: 460 grain No Excuses Conicals
Powder: Pyrodex P and Triple Seven 2f CCI magnum #11 caps
Distance: 53 yards
Weather: 25º no wind, over cast, looks like it will snow
I trudged through the snow and set the target up at what I thought was 50 yards and then trudged back to the shooting bench. I had read my notes and wondered just how low I could shoot a large conical bullet. I settled on trying 40 grains of Pyrodex P but as the photo shows, I just don't think it was enough to stabilize them.
My notes (and other White rifles like this load) said 65 grains of Pyrodex P or 80 grains of Triple Seven 2f. Being in a powder burning kind of mood, I used the Triple Seven. I just loaded and started shooting at the same target. No idea of how many shots I fired.
I finally decided that hole was big enough. So I decided to switch bulls eyes and shoot just as fast as I could. No swabbing, no wads, just shoot, dump more powder, conical, and fire.
The next bulls eye was really taking a beating and so was I. I had started off with near a full box. That's when I realized...
Another twenty buck down the drain. But it was a lot of fun to sit in the back yard and make smoke. Nice little rifle, nice scope, nice load. What more could you ask for.

that model 97 is a sweet rifle. And with that big conical bullet does well. But I ordered a couple hundred 488 grain for it. It is supposed to be more accurate with them. Time will tell.

Man, that thing can shoot! And that big old chunk of lead would put the hurt on anything. I hope I don't ever run across one of those guns for sale locally. I would end up having to buy a bullet mold for it.

I have to dig out my snowshoes and stomp a trail. A friend is coming over tomorrow and she's bringing her cross country ski's. Maybe I will have her pack a trail as well. 100 yards in over a foot of snow is no fun with my bad knee.

The lady I married afew years ago had really bad knee's, I talked her into getting them replaced about 18 months back now we go dancing and walking and she never even thinks about them
If things get to bad and don't heal up you may want to consider the possibility.
Good shooting.
