pellets

Why pellets? Why would some one use pellets when you get alot more powder for less and able to adjust charge for better grouping?

I have finally tried 777 and 777 pellets this last week and do like the way it preforms. But the cost of 6.8oz of pellets verses 16.0 oz of powder does not out weigh the ease of use.

cayugad 12-18-2010 11:53 AM

And their eyes were opened and they saw the light...

Exactly. That is what people have been saying I think ever since the pellets hit the market. Although I have one rifle that shoots Pyrodex Pellets better then anything else I have tried to stuff down it. Even when I load loose Pyrodex it does not get as good of results. No understanding as to why.

lemoyne 12-18-2010 12:33 PM

There is a point which you did not mention.
Several of use that reload have weighted a bunch of them and compared them to some load of loose that were thrown with a funnel top cut off type powder measure.
The results were surprising the pellets were as much as 5 grains off in the worst cases while the loads thrown with a volume measure stay with in +- 1 with a few exceptions that when to +2.
That and the fact that you can very the load more to what the gun shoots best.
For instance my triumph shoots certain load much better with 115 gr than with 110 or 120 gr.

as i sit here choking and cleaning my guns that just fired pyrodex pellets. I am that much more thankful for blackhorn209 LOL.

Got to brush my teeth and gargle after. This stuff just STINKS! And to think i used to shoot tons of this stuff and liked the smell. How things change

I know what you mean. I only bought a 24 pack of 777 to try out and looking forward to a trip to Bass Pro to get some powder, I just wish it was closer. I will just have to wait and stick with the smell. It is about $10 more around here. I am wanting to try Blackhorn 209, but no one carrys it, and I don't see it on Bass Pro's web site. I am hoping they carry it in the store and just don't have it on there site.

nchawkeye 12-18-2010 03:33 PM

I'll go you one better, why 777 or why Pryodex??? Why not FFF Goex??? (Unless you can't find it in your area)...

liquidorange 12-18-2010 04:04 PM

because they are convenient and very consistant for the most part and you get em dirt cheap at wally world at the end of the season. or use to anyway. :s7: if you have shakey hands or other medical conditions pellets load easier.

Only found one can of it, and it was FFG. It was at a gun shop on consignment.

SJAdventures 12-18-2010 04:18 PM

I used to use pellets for the convenience until I started listening to some very serious ML shooters and decided loose grain was the way to go in most cases for a more precise control over the load you want to shoot and for accuracy.

Mine don't order enought hunting equipment for any of the seasons. They were out of muzzleloading supplies a couple of weeks ago.

ADVWannabee 12-19-2010 05:17 AM

I go against the grain here, if you will pardon the pun. :) I am using pellets for the convenience and in my Knight Revolution it will put the bullets touching at 100 yards. Can't ask for better than that. Now my TC Encore isn't shooting quite as well but it is new and may still be breaking in. If I don't get it shooting tighter, I may switch to loose powder for it.

If your gun will shoot it, I say go ahead.

hometheaterman 12-19-2010 08:44 AM

I like pellets and the reason is I hunt with my muzzle loader. It's much easier to deal with reloading pellets in the field that loose powder. If I just shot at the range and that was it, I'd use loose powder, but for the field I like the pellets quite a bit.

Gm54-120 12-19-2010 09:27 AM

I used pellets for years after using Pyro loose. Then switched to BH209 and filled tubes at home before hunting or shooting at the range.

I find it every bit as easy to pour out a tube as i do dropping in 2 pellets in the field. There is a tiny bit more "prep" time but i can do it in comfort and without distractions.

Pyro pellets are dirty and T7 pellets gave me a terrible crud ring. The mags were even worse. That little bit of prep time now seems to not matter since i no longer need to swab between shots for best accuracy.

Now i set my accuracy/performance standards higher and can achieve my goals easier and im more confident in the loads ive chosen. Im also a range junkie and love tailoring my loads a bit finer than pellets allow. I also shoot a ML during all seasons and its not just a seasonal thing for me. IMO seasonal shooters are probably better off with pellets but if your burning several pounds a year then loose has the advantages an enthusiast wants to achieve.

Me too. I see no advantage or ease in using pellets - especially when the cost per shot is 2x or more.

With my TC quikshot, I can reload faster with powder than pellets.

moridgerunner 12-19-2010 07:04 PM

I haven't been shooting muzzleloaders for a year yet but I have learned a lot. I bought 777 pellets to save money( I had not decided on measuring equipment and only wanted to buy it once.) and the pellets got me on the range shooting and learning immediately. With both 777 pellets and blackhorn 209 I can shoot as well as my scope will let me. If I had a target scope (16x or better) I could truly see what an accurate instrument my accura is. I have not tried any other powders but I will as time permits. My muzzleloader sure is fun to shoot!

It all depends on where you buy your pellets, but pellets are any where from $2.55 to $3.80 per oz. more than powder. At Cabelas, pellets would be $65.76 lb. while powder is $24.95 lb. That is a differance of $40.81 lb. That is the cheapest I have found it. Walmart here is $54 more lb. for pellets. I don't see any money saving there. You can buy measuring equipment with the differance.

Used two 50 grain Pyrodex pellets interchangeably with 100 grains of loose RS in my rifles for years. Both worked very well for me and i like the convenience of the pellets.

You get fifty 100 grain equivalent shots from a pack of Pyrodex pellets. 100 measured grains of Pyrodex RS weighs right around 70 grains. There are seventy 100 grain equivalent shots in a pound of Pyrodex RS.

Going prices at the local Chairman Mao store:
One pound of Pyrodex RS = $19.95 x tax = 1.085 x $19.95 = $21.65.
Pack of 100 Pyrodex pellets = $24.95 x tax = 1.085 x $24.95 = S27.07.

Price of powder per shot using Pyrodex RS = $21.65 divide by 70 = $0.31.

Price of powder per shot using pellets = $27.07 divide by 50 = $0.54.

There is 7.44oz more with powder than pellets with Pyrodex, and 9.2oz more with 777. Your math does not compute.

falcon 12-20-2010 04:28 AM

Forget ounces. There are 50 two pellet shots in a package of 100 Pyrodex pellets. There are 70 shots per one pound can (7,000 grains) of Pyrodex RS.

Breechplug 12-20-2010 04:41 AM

I also use both Pyro Powder and Pellets. In one of My Accura's it's set up for using 2 50gr Pellets, it shoots nice tight groups, no complaints. I buy the Pellets at the end of the Season when there marked down, I save a-lot.
My other 2 Accura's are set up for Pyro Powder, again no complaints, so I have to clean all 3 of My MLer's a little longer, I dont mind it gives me something to do at night after the Hunt while the Wife's at work.
So the cost between the Powder and the Pellets is'nt that far off to notice, Im Pleased with both Powder and Pellets.

Right now I'm shooting 777 pellets, but next year I'm switching over to Blackhorn 209 and going with the powder.

oldsmellhound 12-20-2010 06:12 AM

Pellets are a good way for people with no blackpowder experience to get into the sport. That's how I started- I had no one to teach me, and I was a little intimidated by the whole powder measuring thing, and had no info on the subject. So I used pellets my first year hunting, and they worked.

I soon found out, however, that they were expensive, and I wasn't getting good accuracy with them and couldn't fine-tune my load. So I switched to loose T7. Now I just pre-measure a bunch of Lane's Tubes before I go to the range, or go hunting, and it is almost as easy and convenient as using pellets, with much lower cost and much greater accuracy.

Top of the line gun - $700+
Good scope - $250+
Bullets - $1 each
Whizzing away 23 cents per shot with pellets instead of loose - who cares!

Gm54-120 12-20-2010 04:51 PM

Putting pellets in my Knights would be like putting an automatic transmission in my Ducati. :eek2:

Not a chance and it even has an annoyingly loud dry clutch and sweet Leo Vince full exhaust. :D

That looks like the new 1200cc water cooled wet clutch version of mine too....Multistrada with a side of carbon fiber please. :barmy:

builder459 12-20-2010 06:14 PM

2 pellets closer to .60 cents,no ability to fine tune the load..loose all the way!

And quite a bit more if you have a 45 or 54 cal and even less tunable.

johnnyo 12-20-2010 06:37 PM

Surprisingly, 3-30gr T7 pellets is the most accurate load I can come up with for 230gr xtp's in the yellow ez=load sabots. Next is 70gr, T7 - 3f, with the same sabots... go figure!

SecondChance 12-20-2010 08:53 PM

I have 3 unopened boxes of 50 cal, 50grn T7 pellets in my safe that are fixn to get dumped out in the snow if I can't pawn them off on someone around here before long. I don't know how long they are good, but I have had them for 2 years and am tired of moving them. Went to loose T7 and have never looked back in my Knight DISC.
