Teflon tape

I have heard a little about teflon tape being used on breech plugs.I'm getting ready to go do some shooting maybe tomorrow. The question is do i need teflon tape and use my T17 Breech Plug Grease together or can i just use Breech plug grease on my Omega Breech Plug

The Teflon Tape is more of a use for (Blow Back) than for ease of removing the Breechplug, even though it serves both porpouses. If you have little to no Blowback the T17 BP Grease is enough.

I quit using grease several years ago - just a bit messy for me. Just hated cleaning it out of threads - I only use tape now.

Probably not needed on a Speed Breech, especially shooting BH but I still use it...

This is an over-due job - but I feel better... and I am shooting T7 so it doesn't hurt....

ronlaughlin 11-07-2010 04:19 PM

On my Omega breech plug, i use only teflon tape. On my Accura breech plug i use only teflon tape.

No grease for me.

zZ50CalZz 11-07-2010 04:32 PM

Hey thanks for the info guy's I have 2 tubes of grease so guess I'll use it up just was reading a HORROR story about a seized up breech plug.

cayugad 11-07-2010 04:39 PM

Do you wind your tape clockwise or counter clockwise?

I personally use both the tape and some Slick 50 One Grease I smear on the tape. I have never, since I started doing that, had a stuck plug.

sabotloader 11-07-2010 04:56 PM

cayugad

I wrap mine with the direction of the threads as you insert it. If you go the other way it can ball up and tear....

zZ50CalZz 11-07-2010 05:00 PM

So you guy's think i should just use tape or both or just grease if i just use this grease how many times can i shoot until i have to take it out and clean it?

zZ50CalZz 11-07-2010 05:10 PM

Just lookin at your picture of your breech plug Sabotloader was that target shoot by a muzzleloader that's some nice shooting.

Gm54-120 11-07-2010 05:30 PM

I wipe the threads with a lightly oiled patch then apply Teflon tape. I used to use Loctite anti seize but it is really messy.

sabotloader 11-07-2010 05:30 PM

zZ50CalZz

With the tape I never take mine out until I am done shooting.

Yep! I am pretty sure that is a Triumph target shooting Gold Dots. I have to confess though it is a chrono target so it is only a 50 yard target.

Here is another pic using a Remington breech plug...

After all these years of using this picture - I just noticed an error in my directions... It says to wrap from the NIPPLE end - not correct wrap from the barrel end back to the nipple/primer end....

I think the reason most of the BP Horror Stories you hear are from (Overtightening) the BP, and also from a lack of Lube. I just Hand Tighten My BP's and never ever had a problem getting one out, how about the rest of you, how tight to you tighten your's? And Sabotloader turned me onto the Teflon Tape thing and I do use it, I dont cover the end of My BP (Fire Hole) like he does, but as you can see it does'nt hurt as Sabotloader does it and it works fine.
What happened to the (PINK) Teflon Tape Sabotloader? I still cannot find that color.

Wow they get pretty dirty for 20 shots and hey thanks alot for all the info guy's.I hope I'm able to make it out N get some shooting in tomorrow.

zZ50CalZz 11-07-2010 05:55 PM

I hope I'm able to get these shockwaves i have down the bore.I plan on using them up getting close to bulls eye then find the sweet spot with these XTP's ill use for hunting.

SecondChance 11-07-2010 06:13 PM

I shoot a Kinght Disc Extreme. Do you think I could use the Teflon tape just the same? I have the white tape.

lemoyne 11-07-2010 06:34 PM

I use the tape on all my BP even the ones one the Triumph and endeavor.
I have tried all the different way I heard mentioned, then came up with my own that I like best, I wrap my very similar to Sabot loaders but have found that on the hand removable plugs I have the best results by wiping a rag that has just a bit of synthetic oil over them after they are wrapped. This not only makes them easier to operate by hand but keeps them in good enough shape that if I need to pull one while hunting it will be in good enough shape to reuse with out having to re-wrap.

SecondChance

Here is a Knight plug wrapped with white tape... I just noticed an error in one of my pictures.... Start wrapping at the barrel end of the plug - wrap back to the nipple end...

zZ50CalZz 11-07-2010 06:58 PM

LOL hey sabotloader do you got some good Elk hunting around where you live?

sabotloader 11-07-2010 06:59 PM

Breechplug

The pink tape is still out there you might have to go to regualr plumbing store and ask for it. Normally store that install natural gas supplies have it also. So far I have been able to get it at Lowes....

You mention finger tight... I would suggest maybe snug. The whole key is to get the blow back gas stopped at the point where the breech plug seals up against the flange or ring in the barrel. Another good point is to make sure you are getting the flange in the barrel right at the end of your breech plug threads clean.... that shelf tends to build up carbon and gunk over time and makes it very tough to get the seal...

Here is another one of my 2-bit pictures I made with Underclock's help... that i try to explain this whole thing

Idaho - northern Idaho to be exact.... and there is a decent population of elk right here close - but we are in a losing battle with wolves - they are certainly getting their share...

zZ50CalZz 11-07-2010 07:03 PM

Nice you seem really knowledgeable about Mler's sabotloader I'm glad i found this web site been learning alot from you guy's

zZ50CalZz 11-07-2010 07:04 PM

Yea are you aloud to trap them wolves

sabotloader 11-07-2010 07:08 PM

zZ50CalZz

I believe there is a trapping season for them - but in most cases they are protected - endangered...

This site is a very good one - there are some really good folks on here that have been muzzleloading much longer than I have - i am old but fairly knew to the sport... problably been active in this for 15 years - I have even given up hunting with a centerfire - I really feel good using a ML during our regualr rifle season.

zZ50CalZz 11-07-2010 07:16 PM

Same here thats what i plan on doing to i have taken alot of game here in PA.If everything works out for me I'm probably going to hunt just with Mler's.Hey 2 years ago i trapped a black coyote.Nice big male about 45 pounds I'll look around for some pictures of it i kno i have some around here just have to find them.

onebigelk 11-07-2010 07:26 PM

sabotloader is correct about the tape color. Pink is used for natural gas or propane pipe fittings. White is for general purpose use. But I don't suppose it matters used for this purpose. If I remember correctly the pink is somewhat thicker than white. As zz50calzz says, it is very educational listening in on the knowlegeable conversations by all you ML experts.

sabotloader 11-07-2010 07:43 PM

onebigelk

You are correct the pink is the thicker of the two. Which tape you use depends on how tight the plug is in you ML. With some ML's the pink is to thick and will not screw into the port with cutting and balling the tape up - so in that case use the white tape.

I three of my Knights I use pink tape ant in 2 others I use white tape.

And as shown pink is to thick for the Triumph...

There are actually 4 colors/grades of polytetrafluoroethylene (teflon) tape available:

white - single density for small diameter thread joints (best on joints under 3/8" IPS)

pink - double density for large diameter thread joints (best on 1/2" - 2" IPS)

yellow - for gas lines (even a bit more dense & thick)

green - for oxygen lines (oil free)

I carry white, pink, and yellow on my truck (I'm a plumber, but also install black iron gas lines).

I have one inline (a Traditions) that the breech plug will seize if I use grease only. First time I took it to the range (anti-seize lube only) I actually had to remove the breech plug with an impact wrench. The plug allows so much blowback (the dirt gets so far back in the threads) that it will break loose fairly easily, then seize after about 1/4 to 1/2 turn out.

I found the yellow tape would work on the breech plug the fit is so bad.
With the yellow tape it's "hard to put in - hard to take out" for the breech plug, but at least it will come out.

I'd say the pink tape would be a good one to start with on most breech plugs. It's similar to white in thickness, but much denser (for comparison think of a tight weave fabric - a lot more material in the same area).

BTW - I use tape and "dope" on all my pipe joints and have had no problems with leaks in the past 10+ years since I started using both. I do the same with the breech plug.

I have thought about using Teflon tape but thought it might be a bad idea. Guess I was wrong! I’m new to MLers, but my breech plug has never been difficult to remove. I have been using XF7 Weapons Lubricant, SPARINGLY, on my BP since day one. My longest shooting session has only been 50 or so rounds, but at the end, removing it was a breeze, and I tighten it down pretty good. I may cut that out though since I’ve learned it’s not necessary.

I use the XF7 on my M14 (a gun that requires GREASE, not oil!) and, I have to say, it’s amazing stuff.

sabotloader 11-08-2010 04:17 PM

Just made up another picture set for zZ50, thought I would post it... might help clear up my other errors...

Also make sure you are wrapping in the correct direction...

zZ50CalZz 11-08-2010 04:30 PM

Kool more the info the better lol right..I got her under control now buddy i cant wait to see how it shoot's thanks for helping out
