Powder question

OK i got an old black powder gun that is a side hammer precusion cap ....we usually shoot 90 grains of powder pushing a ball and patch ....now my mother wants to shoot it and we were thinken of shooting 60 grains of pyro pellets and a xtp240grain bullet ..she will be shooting at no more then 40 yards is that enouph powder for the job?

I shoot my old ball and cap with as little as 40g of 777 in it for my son. I will still hit well and has very little kick to it. I would stay away from the pellets and stick with powder myself.

I'm betting the twist in the barrel will be wrong for pistol bullets, the rifling depth may be wrong as well...Can you look at it and get a name off the gun, caliber would be nice as well...

If it were me, I'd drop the powder charge down to 65-70grs with the patched ball and see how she grouped at 40 yards...If it groups well, and I bet she will, I'd take it hunting...

OK thanks for the Info ... i ended up using powder and about 60 grains ..so i think thats equals an actual 70 grains with a ball and patch

Thanks for the info guys i set the gun up with 60 grains of powder and a pach and ball and sent her hunting with my dad and she shot a button buck at 65 yards and hit it in the heart and it ran maybe 45 yards into the woods and died

Congrats to your mom
I often shoot my knight in-line with with patch&balls and shot a 7 points buck at 85 yards and dropped it in his tracks.
