Default Shooting the White,

I received and mounted the Lyman sight and Sunday afternoon went to shoot it. Things didn't do all that good the first 2 sessions. Sunday afternoon was session 1 . I shot 460 gr bullshops and 70 gr 777 and 75 gr pyrodex. Took about 20 shots . First couple at 25 yads to see if it was on paper. It was so i went to 50 yards. took about a dozen shots and finally achieved about a 2 inch group. Not good. The main problem I encountered was the cap wouldn't fire on first pull. It took the first shot to seat the cap and then it fired on the second shot. I quit after about 20 shots of this and decided to try again later. Monday I polished the nipple to see if the cap would seat better.
I couldn't change nipples because the nipple is part of the breechplug. well I went back out and shot 10 more shots. same result, took 2 trigger pulls to fire. . I decided to take a little more off the nipple, so I used my diamond sharpener and worked on it til the cap was seated good but still tight enough to form a good seal.I was running low on conicals til an order comes in so I grabbed some 250 gr shockwaves with black sabots just for fun. I went back out and realized i only had containers of 100 gr 777 powder. decided to shoot it anyway to see if it would fire first time.
It fired flawlessly and i found that a 100 gr 777 and a 250 gr shockwave gives a great group. Not exactly a conventional load for a white I realize but a 3/4 inch group at 100 yards with open sights. I might have to hunt with that load. I will post some pictures.
The sight after installation

Sunday and Monday i shot off of sticks both days.Above is part of my loading and support crew.
On Tuesday i shot off the hood of the truck ,100 gr 777 250 shockwave and open sights at 100 yards.

The group is high I realize but a good group for me with open sights at that distance. I still have a long way to go to get the 460 bullshops grouping though.

Hi Chet,
What kind of caps were you using? With my White's I had a lot of the same thing happen with it taking two hits with the hammer, I have switched to the Remington #11 caps and for me it has made a huge difference.
I am surprised you are not getting better groups with that 460 grain Bullshop. Can you feel it lightly engage the rifling when you load it? Have you thought about trying Goex? I know you will get it to shoot better.

I figured someone would say that. But it is only the angle of the photo, plus the gun is not loaded. I was removing a cap. my kids are taught to be behind me at all times when i am shooting . They know not to get in front of or point a gun at anyone, even if it is not loaded. She is off to the side.and plenty safe.

Why not do this type of thing through a PM? Safety is important and I assume that is what you are getting at, but IMO a private reminder might have been better for all...

Another possibility is the plunger spring may have gotten weak or even shortened over time.

Might call Doc at home - he might even still have some of thse springs in his collection of parts at home - call in the evenings...

What diameter of Bull Shops are you using?

They are .504 bullshops but they slid down very easy. Didn't need to push them. Using the 777 since I swab after every shot they were always an easy fit. When I switched to pyrodex they got tight after the 4th shot and the fouling built up. But they were only tight the last 1 or 2 inches. I thought they felt to loose, but they say .504.

Just my experiance and I can relate the same experiance that another member had (C-Daddy) In our U-Mags the .504s were to loose. We had to order the largest Dan had, a .5045s to get the best accuracy from the U-mags. We also used the shot cards underneath. 'Cascade Dad' shot a much heavier load than I did - he was using Swiss and I was using T7-3f. But both of us were confident that were getting obturation of the bullet to fit the bore. Neither one of us patched after a load.
