Default CVA Wolf Observation

My brother-in-law and I were giving a couple of guns a workout on the hunting lease's two-bench rifle range this morning, when the brother-in-law of another member shows up to "borrow our range" to sight in his new, yet to be fired muzzle loader.

This is a real nice guy who has visited our lease on several occasions, and even brought a big pile of catfish fillets last fall and put on a fish fry for the guys in the club. So I relinquished my bench to him with no (well, hardly any) ill feelings.

He pulled a new CVA Wolf out of the rifle case. It was the older model without the quick release breech plug. Now I remembered last fall he came by to check the sights on his CVA Thunderbolt. So I asked him where the Thunderbolt was. He says "aw man, I didn't clean that old gun last year. It got so rusty I couldn't do anything with it, so I chucked it in the trash and bought this."

He had a pack of Hornady 240 grain XTP's and a box of Pyrodex pellets. I watched him as he dropped three pellets down the bore, and asked him why he was using three. He said the guy at the sporting goods store told him the gun was designed for three pellets.

I politely suggested he try two pellets instead, which he did. With a target out at 25 yards, it took three shots to get the new Bushnell scope sighted in to where we thought it should be.

Then we put a target out at 100 yards, and he took three shots. RESULTS: a one and a half inch group clustered right at the point of aim. He grinned like a used car salesman and said "I'm good", and refused to shoot any more, saying he's only going to use the gun on two weekends a year anyway.

As he packed up to go I told him if he didn't clean that gun when he got home I would personally kick his butt.

Anyway, the whole point of this story is this. I've seen many people ask about the Wolf on forums and get a variety of responses. But can honestly say I don't think I've ever seen a report by a Wolf owner complaining about the gun or its accuracy. I must say I was impressed with how that gun shot right out of the box with that basic load.

Many years ago I helped a friends son sight in his Beartooth (I believe it was called) made by New Frontier which was a CVA Wolf. She had bought it for him and neither of them had any idea how to shoot it, and of course no male figure to teach them. BUT... we loaded 85 grains of Pyrodex RS and a 240 grain XTP and that thing was deadly accurate. Then he loaded some 295 grain Powerbelts with the same charge and it shot really good. He shot a deer that year with it at about 30 yards he told me.

my nephews wolf with 2 T7 magnum pellets and a 245gr powerbelt puts them into a nice tight little cluster @ 100. Good little rifles for the price of them.

In my opinion, it's the best gun you can buy at that cost.
