To nice not to shoot today
 

I got in a load of stuff yesterday, a couple scopes, four things of sabots, 180 grain Speer HP, and all sorts of other things I just decided I wanted. So last night I mounted the scope rail on my Green Mountain .45 caliber Stainless steel barrel and threw a Simmons 4x32mm scope on it.

I had a lot of things to do today, but cancelled all of them. Got to have some priorities. It was 28ºs sunny, little wind, and that means shooting. I got out to the range and hiked through the thigh deep in spots snow to the target. It was 30 yards from the bench. Got back to the bench and with a snow shovel dug that out a little so I could sit down.

I then alcohol patched the Renegade with the Green Mountain Barrel, and popped a few caps. I loaded 85 grains of 3f Triple Seven powder and a 200 grain Hornady XTP in a light blue MMP sabot.

The MMP sabot was a real challenge to load, let me tell you. Good thing I ate my Wheaties today. WOW that loaded tight. Shot the first shot and it was low and left. So I made a massive scope adjustment and shot two more, swabbing between shots with alcohol. I noted I made too much of a correction. They hit high and not over to the right enough.

So I went into the house and got some Harvester Crushed Rib .45 caliber light blue sabots. I made another adjustment to the scope and shot five rounds, swabbing every other round.

That was not too bad. I was going to make another adjustment, but decided I did not like the scope rings I used last night. So instead I went in the house and remounted the scope with some quick release mounts.

Tomorrow I should get some things done, but if it is nice, I want to shoot again. As for this load... talk about a sweet load to shoot. Recoil on a scale of 1-10 is a 2 and hardly any barrel jump with that big stainless barrel. I did not that the barrel in the renegade stock was a little loose, so I shimmed it with some duct tape. Much better fit...

Great shooting Cayugad. You're right about how sweet those .45 LRH barrels are to shoot, no recoil to speak of and tight groups.

I've always been a big heavy bullet fan for muzzleloaders, but that .45 with 200 grain bullets have swayed my thinking some. I've got some 180 grain Gold Dots to try also. I hope they shoot because if they do they will be my "go to" bullet for the .45 Renegade next year.

I won't be shooting this week-end. Too dang COLD.

What would you guess is the velocity of that load? Isn't that about what you shot your last orphan with Semisane? And it looked like it opened up real good in that picture.

That weren't no orphan dammit! She was a full year and a half old (and mighty tasty). :wink:

The load I used on both of the does I got with .45 LRH Renegade and .40/200 grain XTPs was 85 grains of GOEX FFFg. I've never chronographed my GOEX load. But you're in luck. Back in Feb '09 I chronographed a variety of loads of T7 FFG with that gun & bullet. Here are 3-shot averages.

60 grains - 1566 fps
70 grains - 1671 fps
80 grains - 1792 fps
90 grains - 1822 fps
100 grains - 1884 fps
110 grains - 2037 fps

So I would guess my 85 grain load of GOEX is somewhere around 1700-1750 fps.

I stopped at 110 grains with the T7 because all three shots with that load rebounded the hammer back to half c0ck.

You may recall, back in December I shot a target with one shot each at 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 and 175 yards using 85 grains GOEX just to see what the real world trajectory would be. It's posted in this thread: http://huntingnet.com/forum/black-po...king-45-s.html

Sounds like fun. I have really been wanting to go shooting lately but its hard to get my schedule to coordinate with the weather! Maybe this weekend

Nice Dave. Those .45s are nice. And they are accurate too. Mine likes the 80 gr of Pyro P with the blue Harvester CR and 200 gr XTP (.40 cal).
Good shooting. I suspect with a little palying around, she'll come in even tighter.

Good shooting Dave. Sounds like you may have the better weather for a change, we have snow cold and wind here. Yesterday I used the tractor to dig out the snow around the buildings on my hunting land. Lee
