1" vs. 15/16" GM Barrels
As most of us know, Sabotloader is a proponent of using 15/16" barrels in the 1" barrel channel of a Renegade's stock. (He's old and feeble, ya` know.)
I presently have two 28" 50 caliber Green Mountain LRH barrels. The 1" model made for the Renegade weighs 5 lbs. 12 oz. The 15/16" model made for the Hawken weighs 4 lbs. 13 oz. So I tried both of them in the Renegade stock. It is amazing the difference that 15 oz. of weight makes in the feel of the gun. I usually hunt from a box or ladder stand and seldom have more than a few hundred yard walk from the camp or my truck to the stand, so barrel weight is no big deal. If I were going to creep through the woods for a few hours I sure would go Sabotloader's route with the 15/16" barrel. |
How well does it fit the channel in the stock? Is there play to it. I have only two of the smaller barrels for a Hawkins and all the others are for the Renegade. Of course the .58 is not offered in the smaller barrel size.

In my case there is no movement at all. Remember the 15/16ths is 1/16th less than the 1" and when you duvide that in half for each side of the barrel - it comes out to 1/32" per side. And of course the bottom flat is locked against the floor of the barrel channel by the wedge and the rear of the barrel is locked in place in the tang. Forgot to mention... (He's old and feeble, ya` know.) |
The 15/16th fits in the 1 inch chamber is the opposite also true. Will 1 inch fit in a 15/16th barrel channel. I would like to get a 20 ga smooth bore barrel and they are all 1 inch. I don't suppose it works the other way.

I did, and I was worried the stock would split.

I thought so only one thing to do buy a renegade I guess ans sell my Penn hunter. You could probably get the one inch barrel in there with a little sanding of the barrel channel. It wouldn't take much. |
You are absolutely right Semi. What was I thinking
