1" vs. 15/16" GM Barrels

As most of us know, Sabotloader is a proponent of using 15/16" barrels in the 1" barrel channel of a Renegade's stock. (He's old and feeble, ya` know.)

I presently have two 28" 50 caliber Green Mountain LRH barrels. The 1" model made for the Renegade weighs 5 lbs. 12 oz. The 15/16" model made for the Hawken weighs 4 lbs. 13 oz. So I tried both of them in the Renegade stock.

It is amazing the difference that 15 oz. of weight makes in the feel of the gun.

I usually hunt from a box or ladder stand and seldom have more than a few hundred yard walk from the camp or my truck to the stand, so barrel weight is no big deal. If I were going to creep through the woods for a few hours I sure would go Sabotloader's route with the 15/16" barrel.

How well does it fit the channel in the stock? Is there play to it. I have only two of the smaller barrels for a Hawkins and all the others are for the Renegade. Of course the .58 is not offered in the smaller barrel size.

In my case there is no movement at all. Remember the 15/16ths is 1/16th less than the 1" and when you duvide that in half for each side of the barrel - it comes out to 1/32" per side. And of course the bottom flat is locked against the floor of the barrel channel by the wedge and the rear of the barrel is locked in place in the tang.

Forgot to mention...

That is true - I even cut down the weight of my hunting pack this year...

Johnmorris 12-21-2009 07:43 AM

The 15/16th fits in the 1 inch chamber is the opposite also true. Will 1 inch fit in a 15/16th barrel channel. I would like to get a 20 ga smooth bore barrel and they are all 1 inch. I don't suppose it works the other way.

sabotloader 12-21-2009 08:50 AM

Johnmorris

That really might be pushing it... I have never tried it in that direction.

cayugad 12-21-2009 08:52 AM

I did, and I was worried the stock would split.

I thought so only one thing to do buy a renegade I guess ans sell my Penn hunter

Here are pictures of the 1" and 15/16" barrels in the stock.

You're not thinking clearly there Johnmorris. The only thing to do is buy a renegade and keep the Penn hunter.

You could probably get the one inch barrel in there with a little sanding of the barrel channel. It wouldn't take much.

Johnmorris 12-21-2009 03:33 PM

You are absolutely right Semi. What was I thinking

idahoron 12-21-2009 06:26 PM

I can't get my 15/16 barrel to fit my 1" renegade. something in the tang area is hanging up. It would let the barrel slide into the channel. Any ideas? Ron

cayugad 12-21-2009 06:35 PM

Check and make sure the under rib is not too long. If it is, that can stop it from getting all the way into the tang.

When you place the hook in the tang - is the hook able to slide all the way into the tang? Some of the older TC tangs will not take the GM hook as it is to thick. Plus on this last barrel I got from Semi the tip top of the hook is just a bit to tall so when you push the barrel down into the channel - it feels like it wants to pop back up.

+ what cayugad said on some of the older TC stocks the under rib is to long on the new GM barrels...

Semisane 12-21-2009 07:55 PM

I had to shorten the under rib by about 3/16", file down the tip top of the hook just a little, and file the flat top of the hook shank between the hook and the rear of the breech plug a little.

Rootsy 12-22-2009 07:52 AM

forget those straight barrels... you haven't lived until you've handled a swamped barreled smoke pole...

idahoron 12-22-2009 01:55 PM

The stock I wanted to put the 15/16 barrel in was one that has had a GM 1" in it. The problem is in the hook and the tang. It won't let it go in or something. Ron

The only thing I can tell is that GM must have changed contractors supplying them the hook breech plug - because these new ones are definitely different than the older ones. I believe the hook is a little wider and the top of the hook is also taller.

What you might do is remove the tang from the gun and try putting it on the barrel. with it removed you will be able to see clearly what is happening.

Hate to dredge up old post but has anyone tried to fit a 15/16" GM on a 1" hawken stock and had nipple alignment issues.

cayugad 11-27-2011 09:23 AM

When I place the 1inch barrel in my Renegade stock, I find I have to use duct tape to get a snug fit. Perhaps because the rifle was my first kit gun I put together is why. I might have over sanded to get the original Douglas barrel to fit right. But the addition duct tape makes an accurate shooter. The once tried the smaller barrel, and it moved around far to much for any accuracy.

How would you like carry a stainless barrel all day, with a scope on it as well? Far too heavy for my liking.

lemoyne 11-27-2011 10:44 AM

I use the 1 inch for the 54 and the 50 and 45 are 15/16. It works quite well for me that way. I found a 15/16- 54 but I did not think it was strong enough.

bronko22000 11-27-2011 02:01 PM

Is there any accuracy difference in shooting the 15/16" bbl in the Hawken vs the Renegade stock?

Akumaet, I have GM barrels on three Renegades and two TC Hawkens and haven't had nipple alignment problems with any of them, regardless of how I switch the barrels and stocks around. One of the Hawken stocks has a 1" channel and the 15/16" GM barrel fits just fine.
