Your lost buck sounds like the classic high (loin only) hit. They typically drop, thrash, regain their feet and disappear. For this reason, I always reload as quickly as possible if a deer drops at the shot.
This is what one of the guys helping me track it thought also. He said the blood we found on the tree's where he had rubbed against looked a little high.
