Ok thanks. It doesn't seem to harsh but it is strong. I think I'm going to at least use it while hunting. However, in all honesty 50 shots a year is probably pushing it as that's honestly probably more than it will see. I just figured I'd throw that out there as it may see up to that many. I like this gun and don't want to mess anything up that's hard to replace or I can't replace. However, if it just shortens the nipple life to me that's a small price to pay for how well it seems to work right now.

Can you shorten the new spring slightly? Just a thought, no need to reply.

I probably could but at the same time I'm kind of afraid if I do that I will mess it up so that it wont work again.

Well, I thought the spring fixed it but I guess not. I shot probably 6-10 caps through it and it did fine. Then I loaded it and shot 3 times without cleaning it fine. Then on the 4th shot it started doing it again. You kept having to shhot twice. I took it and cleaned it since it was pretty dirty by that time. After cleaning it I shot probably 6 or 7 caps throgh it and all but one worked. It's also been rainy and damp so I'm not sure if that made a difference. So what else could it be? I'm at a loss. It seems to work a lot better but not 100%. Would it being dirty after several shots be the cause of this?

I used to run into this problem regularly when I had the shop. If the cap is not seating down far enough to put the primer in the top of the cap in contact with the nipple it does not want to fire the first time its hit.
Solution : Put the thread end of the nipple into a hand drill or drill press after you pad it so you don't ruin the threads and take a flat fine cut file and lay it flat against the nipple taking down the whole side evenly as it turns. Be sure to try the cap every little bit as you do not want it so loose it falls off; it should squeeze on but go all the way to contact with the primer. Lee

After reading some of Dave's stories about the BD - I think it could be related to a dirty (blow back) mechanism - even a dirty nipple where the primer seats...

In my Black Diamond XR when shooting black powder, after ten shots it is sometimes necessary to pull the bolt and the nipple and wipe both of them down. I think it depends on the humidity actually as to how fast it collects fouling. This is also when I take the opportunity and give the breech plug a twist back and fourth to make sure it is not seizing up. The Black Diamond is a great rifle, but a more fouling rifle, I do not think was ever made.
