CVA Bocat - update #1

Well, gone about as far as I can for now. Would like to add some brass wedge plates and buttplate (still looking for those). Here are some pics of the project:

This is the stock version

Barrel, lock and hardware installed as soon as the stock came in

Having decided to reblue the barrel, here it is in the white

Bluing completed

It came out better than I had hoped. Tried something a little different in the process: 1) 220 wet dry, 2) 320 fastcut emory cloth, 3) 0000 steel wool, and something new, 4) white vinegar wipe down. I heard about using the vinegar somewhere a while back - being a weak acid, it apparently finely etches the surface and makes the bluing work better. Well, it did - best job I've done to date.

Here it is with everything in place and the new sights installed

Fired a couple shots thru it yesterday at 15 yards using some TC Cheap Shots and 75 gr P-RS - they were on paper but I wasn't too concerned about the accuracy - need to pick up some hunting sabots and work up a load. I use the Cheap Shots for plinking and when I let anyone else shoot it.

darn nice looking rifle. I love that stock too. What product did you use to re-blue the barrel?

I used the regular Birchwood Casey stuff. I've come up with a method that works very well and pretty durable as well.

I had one of those ever increasing frequent moments of insanity regarding the stock - almost stripped it down and redid it with cherry & dark walnut stain. But, the more I think of that . . . would look pretty good that way with a little polished brass.

Hmmmm . . . never thought to weigh it before I started It is noticeably heavier, but balances more rearward(a big plus for me and my shoulder).

BTW, the shotsI made yesterday was the first smoke I've made in quite a while (only got cleared to shoot , off a rest only, by my surgeon a couple weeks ago). As it happened, there was a slight breeze blowing in my face and . . . my wife thought I was nuts just sitting there with all that smoke around me:D
