Sabot stuck in a TC Triumph Barrel
My Buddy got a TC Triumph for Christmas, I took him out and showed him how to load and shoot and clean it. Well a few weekslater he went out on his own to shoot and got a 300gr Barnes Xpander stuck in the barrel. He did'nt clean between shots, he was using BH209. He said he was gonna try and shoot it out of the gun! Glad he did'nt!!!!! I figured since he was shooting the BH209 I could get the bullet out, well I cant. Also he tried and kept smashing the ram rod against the sabot.I tried a bullet puller with no luck as the Barnes Xpander has no place to grab onto. I tried pushing it out with all my might and cant move it. I also removed the breech plug and got the powder out and tried pushing it out twords the end of the barrel, again no luck. Any advice?????? Thank's BP

RE: Sabot stuck in a TC Triumph Barrel
What if you were to heat the barrel? Just a tad so it expands. Drip some lube and let it set, (you probly already did that) for a day or so, heat the barrel just a bit?????

RE: Sabot stuck in a TC Triumph Barrel
ive used a taped rod and mallet before and it seemed to work good without any damage........

RE: Sabot stuck in a TC Triumph Barrel
Boiling hot water will allow you to get it out. Put the barrel in a vice and fill the barrel up with hot water. Then have someone hold the barrel with gloves on and you should be able to push the bullet down. If that doesnt work i would just send it back to T/C.

Yes, put some solvent in there for sure, and clean the barrel from the breech to the obstruction. Then get a 7/16 or 3/8thirty-six inch hardwood dowel. Sit on a chair on a concrete floor. Insert the dowelin the barrel from the breech end. Gripthe barrel with both hands and, holding it as perfectly vertically asyou can, bump (pound) the protruding dowel against the concrete.

RE: Sabot stuck in a TC Triumph Barrel
My Buddy thought of heating the barrel, he had his torches a few feet from the work bench but I said no because I thought it would hurt the temper of the steel barrel, plus he has the (weather-sheild) finish and I figured that would ruin that for sure. I also see someone mentioned boiling water, I'll try that. I did try a wooden hammer on the end of the ramrod with no movement. This is really got me stumped, I never seen a sabot so stuck befor! BP

You can do the same thing with a steel rod - 1/4" will do -but wrap it with tape to protect the bore.

RE: Sabot stuck in a TC Triumph Barrel
If it won't come out with the suggested methods, can you put the plug back in and rig a way to use compressed air, or even hydraulic fluid to force it out? I'm sure it could be done, but may be moretrouble than it's worth. If all else fails, send to T/C.

RE: Sabot stuck in a TC Triumph Barrel
Take out the breech plug and remove all the powder charge. Put in about 15 grains of powder and shoot it out. This small charge will not generate enough pressure to harm the barrel. Done itseveraltimes on the range for myself and other folks.

There is definitely something wrong with dudes rifle if he was able to get the sabot down the bore and then it go stuck.

Ah yes - the joys of muzzleloading. I guess this can be chalked up to a lesson learned by your buddy. Swab between shots.
I've never had a bullet/sabot stuck in the barrel. Had jags and patches stuck several times. I usually just put about 20 grs of FFFFg in a shoot it out into a soft earth bank. I just realized something else that no one has suggested yet. How about a CO2 discharger? Do you think that would work? |

You can tap it out as suggested...I definately would not try to shoot it out...As sugested, stand the barrel on it's end with the breech down, pout some slovent down on top of the bullet and let set over night...Put a piece of carpet or boat cushion, anything to protect the barrel and take a 3/8 wooden dowel and tap it out...

Take out the breach plug and the barrel out of the stock have some one with heavy insulated gloves hold the barrel pour clean with solvent from both ends the pour boiling water in from one end at a time until the barrel is very hot. this will soften the sabot and you should be able to push it out. If it was brand new and he did not clean the factory grease out that will be what cause the problem. Lee

RE: Sabot stuck in a TC Triumph Barrel
Lemoyne that's a good idea. But if he doesn't have anyone to help him maybe he can boil a big pot of water and lay the barrel in the bath tub and dump the water in the tub and let the barrel soak a few mins to soften up the sabot.
But CAUTION: THAT BARREL IS GOING TO BE HOT. Heavy gloves will be required, or an old towel folded several times. |
RE: Sabot stuck in a TC Triumph Barrel
Got it out!!!! had my Buddy bring the ML over this morning and I poured some MX CS (Montans Xterme Cowboy Solvent) down the barrel, I let it soak in for about 5 hours and then I took a wooden hammer and hit the ram-rod a few times and I got movement. Then finally after a few more time it came out. Then I gave the barrel a good cleaning and applied some MX BC and gave him a good talking to about all I told him befor about shooting, swabing between shots and everything else. Hopefully this will sink in. But man is the barrel tight in the Triumph. After a good inspection the barrel still looks good, so no damage. Thank's for all the advice and hope it never happens again. Thank's to all! BP

Breechplug
Do me a favor if you get a chance, I just got a new Triumph myself and had a heck oftime loading Harvester 40/50 Blue Crush ribs, Harvester Short Black .452/50, BUT the MMP 40/50 loads OK and the HPH-24 Loads perfect as does the Harvseter .452/50 Black Crush Rib... so anyway the favor try pushing a HPH-24 through that bore.... |
RE: Sabot stuck in a TC Triumph Barrel
Hi Mike, good to hear from you and hope all is well. Sorry for the late reply, I just got on. I will do that as long as my buddy has'nt taken the torches to the Triumph. He has no Patience. He loves using someone elses ML for Hunting as long as he does'nt have to load and clean it, but now that he has his own he Hate's it! If things dont work out Im sure I'll be owning a new Triumph Really CHEAP! And YES the bore is tight as heck! I'll let you know. Ron (BP)

RE: Sabot stuck in a TC Triumph Barrel
Hey Breechplug,
Sounds like your buddy needs to find a thinner sabot. Just enough to give him a "2-hand snug to tight fit" with his BH209 fouled barrel. Have fun and be safe! |
RE: Sabot stuck in a TC Triumph Barrel
well if it were me when I run a full time shop I used to use a peice of 1/4 drill rod and a 3 pound hammer round the drivin edge of your rod and firmly but gently drive the offending bullet out. Set the muzzle on a block of wood on the floor preferably a concrete floor when you get the bullet to the muzzle just pick up the barrel at the end hold the drill rod with 2 fingers and gentle finish taping the bullet out .In my experience when you heat a barrel the plastic sabot heats quicker and expands quicker locking the bullet fast.
