RE: dial up sucks (venting)
ORIGINAL: cayugad Well I seem to wait and wait for a lot of this site also, so I could not even think of what it would be like back on dial up. I complain about the Wild Blue but only because they do not put out what the "technically" promise. Let me tell you some of the real truth about Dish Network Wild Blue Internet Satellite. For instance, they tell you about (their basic package)512 down load speed and 128 upload speed. What they don't tell you is if you're getting in the area of 300 down load speed, they consider that in their range. What they figure on is, if you were getting 28 down load speeds before, you're still in hog heaven, and you are. And if you had read the tiny print five page contract you have to sign, you would have known that. The same goes for upload speed. If you're getting 70 or above, then they are in their projected range of the 128 they like to brag on the adds about. So never believe that stuff they push on their TV adds. They also tell you weather does not effect the system. Well what they meant to tell you is some weather does not effect the system. But some does. So if you get a heavy rain the satellite goes out. If you get a snow (like it never snows here) it will slow the satellite down. You also have to worry about the weather over your "hub" which is where the signal is brought in and bounced or something. Mine happens to be Cheyenne Wyoming. And if you call to complain they put you through all these tests for twenty minutes, and then give you a song and dance that they don't know what might be causing it tonight. And to check back with them tomorrow and see if it is not better. A lot of their speed problems from talking to the person (my brother the computer geek) that built my slap bang custom made, super fast computer.. they over sell their bandwidth. So if a satellite can handle lets say 1,000,000 homes at a time, but it just so happens all the kids are out of school and there is 1,299,999 people all working for that signal... guess what happens. The signal drops. Now you can not get Dish Network to admit to overselling their signal. All you can do is put up with the slow speeds. Ever wonder how fast your system is... http://performance.toast.net/default.asp go to that site and run a test. Or http://speedtest.net/ it will give you an idea of how well you are doing. Or NOT doing in many cases... 1 NIGHT SCREEN GOT FUZZY. SHE CALLED AND THEY SAID,go up on roof and knock the ice off the lines, that will cure it. well, she is now on COMCAST TRIPLE PLAY. COMCAST is not cheap BUT if something is broke they are there to fix it the same day or next day. |
RE: dial up sucks (venting)
Embarq for me. I think my internet is about $30/month. Click and see any topic right away, see videos instantly.

RE: dial up sucks (venting)
how far from the road I live. it will cost $20,000 just to run lines for cable. so that take embarq and comcast out.
I'll keep checking dsl providers. but I gotta stay with what I have. |
RE: dial up sucks (venting)
I hear ya bro, it's dial-up, satellite, or wireless around here. Know a few folks locally who have the satellite or wireless, and not one of them is satisfied with what they're getting for the $$$ at this point. Until those services improve in this area, I'll stick with dial-up.
Didn't used to be so bad, but like cayugad said, the graphics are getting to be more & more, & dial-up can't take it. |
RE: dial up sucks (venting)
I have dial up netzero it has that thing that cayugad was talking about with the pic. deal which makes it faster
but then you have to inhance the photo.I just don't get on a computer that is faster than mine so i really don't realize how slow mine is.:D |
RE: dial up sucks (venting)
t heard is now own by verizon) in our area. I think I will hold out until I figure what I can pay for. maybe some of the companies that have the wireless cards run some deals and put out lower cost plan ORIGINAL: corey012778 we have alltel (if you had not heard is now own by verizon) in our area. I think I will hold out until I figure what I can pay for. maybe some of the companies that have the wireless cards run some deals and put out lower cost plan I'm impressed for $30 for unlimited usage. Not the cheapest but it's cheap for being pretty darn fast and also being able to take it basically anywhere you get good signal with your phone. |
RE: dial up sucks (venting)
I'm at a friends house now that has satellite internet. I've only had one other buddy that has had it and he didn't like it as he said they cut it back to dial up speeds if you downloaded more than they allowed in a day and if you kept downloading they cut it off for several hours.
Well, while I used his a tad bit not enough to pay attention. Here my cell phone doesn't work well enough to use it for the net as they are out in the country and I get 1 bar then lose signal then one bar then lose it again. So I'm on their satellite internet. I have to say it has felt a lot slower than my internet does on my phone. I just ran a speed test and got 318kbps download and 51kbps upload. While that's quite a bit faster than dial up it's quite a bit slower than the internet on my phone is as I often see between 700kbps to 1mbps. Sometimes I've seen higher and a few times lower but usually it's around those numbers. I don't think I've ever seen it this low. Plus at $30 a month I'm sure it's a lot cheaper than satellite internet they have. I know it's cheaper than my other buddies as he cut his off as soon as his contract ended and starting using his phone for internet also. He really liked it other than you can't use your phone while using the internet on it. I'm not sure if they have Hughes net or Wild Blue as I don't see it on the modem and haven't looked at the Dish. It's not bad but no where near as fast as my phone and about 15-20x slower than the cable modem. Still not bad for surfing the net and since it's the only option besides dial up out here I think it's a good choice. I just think if you can use the net on your phone as in get good signal it's better. I don't know what will happen when it gets fully switched to Verizon as they don't to my knowledge offer a unlimited data plan for tethering but for right now at least you could take advantage of that. Hopefully Verizon keeps it at least for a while. |
RE: dial up sucks (venting)
Hi Corey,
Dial up sucks and I haven't been using it for 6 years now. But this site is having problems and it takes quite a long while sometimes for a page to refresh. Did a traceroute and there were no packet losses between my computer and their firewall so the problems seem to be coming after the firewall. If you are that far from the road, I don't think DSL will be an option (Most Telcos limit ADSL lines to 15,000 ft from the CO (not as the crow flies, but how long the actual circuit is). Your best bet would be to get the wireless internet from a cell provider or see if someone in your area is providing the service using radio waves (must be in line of site of tower and well within a 20 mile range). Someone mentioned that they get unlimited usage for $30 a month on their wireless which is great. For $30 in Canada I get 1gb of downloads and cost extra above that. At my cabin I use the wireless and have a small antenna on my eave so I can get a good realiable signal to my computer. Ben |
RE: dial up sucks (venting)
Well, the satellite internet is a little faster today. I got a download of 531kbps the first time and I forgot the upload. Well the first time it was in the 400's. I did a test later to post the results here and it was 531kbps download and I hit the link for this page so accidnetall lost it. I thought the upload was in the 40's but not sure so I did another one.
This time it was 528kbps download and 29kbps upload. It's not bad at all for being out in the country this far. |
RE: dial up sucks (venting)
I know I'm bringing back up a week old topic but oh well.
Well got a new smart phone and was playing with tethering it to my computer to use my cell phone as internet and did a speed test with it. I got 1185kbps download and 99kbps upload. As you can see not super duper fast but a fair bit faster than the satellite and a lot of dsl. It's not bad at all for using the phone as a modem. These are about the speeds I saw with my Razr too. The unlimited tethering plan is $10 a month if you have a smartphone or $30 a month for a normal phone. Still both are cheap for unlimited internet of this speed that's wireless and you can take whereever you want as long as you get signal. |
