Renegade @ the Dinger Farm

Got out today to do some shooting. Reading some of Cayugad's posts the other day gave me an itch to shoot a sidehammer + test another barrel that I have used M. X-treme in. This was the first outing with this rifle with a treatment of MX so I was not sure what to expect.
When i got to the Dinger Farm I set everything up including a chronograph just for the heck of it. Never shot PRB's across a chrono. Does a .490 Round Ball have a BC? I mean I know it does but I have no idea what it might be - can not imagine it is real high. I am somewhat disappointed with myself as I did not put the 'sky screens' on the chrono because I felt there was enough cloud cover - now I wish I had - I will have to do the shoot over again to verify velocities - they seem somewhat slow to me for a 175 grain projectile.

Patching.... when I got the rifle out and set it up to begin shooting I ran one dry patch. Then I popped 3 caps and ran the patch again. Then i loaded and commenced to shoot. No additional fouling other than the caps to clear the flash channel. Shooting 60 grains of T7-3f - the first shot hit where I hoped it would and easily was in the group. I was hoping to use the 1 patch for all of the shooting that I was going to do today and I could have but I worked my way through the first patch and had to use a second. I believe I could have loaded all loads today without patching at all. Twice today I did feel the begining of a ruff spot of fouling right above the breech plug - the dry patch worked through it very easily both times.
I shot 18 shots in all. 12 Shots were shot in the target and 6 additional shots shooting 5 clay pigeons placed at 25, 50, 75, and 100 yards. Due to my inability to keep the 'V' peep and the front bead in the correct line it took two shots @ 75 and 100. I find myself trying to 'peak & see' the target better - so allow myself to make the sights fit the picture I want to see. I remain an average open sight shooter - but give me a scope and it is a different story.

Here is the target...

At the end of the day I snapped a picture of the work area. You can see the two dry patches on the edge of the tail gate that I used during the shoot and the two windex patches and a dry patch that I ran at the end of the shoot.

Still do not know if the Montana X-treme is buying me anything - but I continue to work with it and it continues to work for me.

Here are some BC's that you can use in G1 table.

Caliber/BC
.570 .066
.535 .062
.530 .061
.495 .057
.490 .056
.457 .053
.454 .052
.451 .052
.445 .051
.440 .051
.433 .050
.375 .043
.350 .040

Here is a chart for a .530 ball at 1700 fps with a front sight height of .75 inch above bore centerline and with a 50 yard zero.

Range Elevation Velocity
0 yds -0.75 in 1700 fps
25 yds 0.15 in 1448 fps
50 yds 0.00 in 1242 fps
75 yds -1.56 in 1093 fps
100 yds -4.91 in 997 fps
125 yds -10.37 in 928 fps
150 yds -18.19 in 872 fps
175 yds -28.70 in 824 fps
200 yds -42.10 in 781 fps
225 yds -58.88 in 742 fps
250 yds -79.26 in 705 fps
275 yds -103.57 in 671 fps
300 yds -132.53 in 639 fps

That is some real good shooting there Sabotloader...

cayugad

Perfect - thanks Dave that is what I wanted to know... This is the gun that I use for Rhondy shoots... It is really fun to go and just shoot, thats why the light load but it really surprises me how well that load shoots and how far it will shoot...

Again today I think the X-treme really helped. At no time today did have a any problem pushing the load down the barrel - but I did run those dry patches.

I have a couple rifles for tomorrow to try out. I put a fancy scope on my Genesis. Its a 1.5-6x40mm with an illuminated cross hair in it. So I want to get that sighted in. And I have another inline I want to shoot. And now I just have to dig out an old Renegade and shoot that. So it looks like a long day on the range. BUT its going to be warm tomorrow. They are talking 26 degrees.

Run those BCs through your ballistics programs. :D I was going to guess .050 almost as a joke, but Dave's tables sort of made it serious.

Nice report, Mike.

UC

Shoot! UC I did try to run it through my ballistics program, but it will not accept a BC less than .100 - Never thought a RB would be down there that far...

I will eventually set up targets at the various ranges and get some measurments that way. But before I can even do that I got figure out a way to quit peeking over the top of the front sight. At close range getting everything centered is fairly easy - i just trust my eye to line things up... but when you are shooting a clay pigeon @ 100 - it is pretty dang small! and with my eyes it is even smaller...

Better order up some antibiotics, you got a good case of crud ring from UC!!!! I highly recommend using a wet patch rather than a dry patch. :D

Cdad

Good to hear from ya...

Naw! i don't think it is UC's 'crud ring' it is in da wrong place and I can't use a wet patch cause I am doing a speriment wit a new product.
Dat was my first outing witda new product indis gun &barrel. It takes 2-3 times to make it really good. didja read I only used 2 patches fer da hole shoot?

When I hit disruff spot - even with a dry patch it went right on threw - no hardness to it at all - no need to work it...

We mite be comin ur way da weaken of da 31-1 - let ya no mo later..
