I thought about going hunting tonight, until i went out and got the mail..............

RE: cold snap

Last night was -22+ below zero. The neighbor had -29 below last night but he lives down in the river bottom. Tonight they are talking -28 below so it will mean more like -35 below zero really. Its always about five degrees or more colder at my house then in town. Then when you add the windchill factor, you get in the -50 below factor. So its a good time not to be outside on the range and shoot. Just walking out to the mail box was a trip.

RE: cold snap

17 below this morning, up to 5 by mid afternoon and back down to 20 below tonight. The rabbits will be dancing in the fields trying to keep warm.

It was so cold here last night, someone told me they saw Smokey the Bear running around begging someone to start a forest fire...

RE: cold snap

hahahahaha Thats pretty funny cayagud. I really dont know how y'all take that kind of weather. Do you hunt in that cold of weather?

cayugad 01-14-2009 01:58 PM

RE: cold snap

I once deer hunted and it was -32 below zero but I just could not last out side. Even in a blind out of the wind. After a short time, I just sat there and started to shiver. When we ice fish we sit in huts with heaters most the time. Although there are some that will bucket sit.

Actually in this kind of weather if there is no wind, this is the time to cut firewood and expecially split firewood. You stay warm working, and the wood just pops apart when it is this cold.

-28 it is cold ..but the sun is out ,so it's not too bad ..cut some cedar branches ,and brought them to the deer .my turn to give something back to them ..

heinz.. do your deer yard up where you are at?

gregrn43 01-14-2009 02:54 PM

RE: cold snap

Do the deer eat cedar up there? They wont hardly touch them here, but they may be a different type of cedar.

heinz57 01-14-2009 03:08 PM

RE: cold snap

yes the deer yard up after the first snow fall ..my friend has cedar trees near his summer cottage and all the lower branches are chewed off..we lost a lot of deers last winter,in some places 62% of the deer starved to death [ a very sad situation] if it keeps on snowing we shall lose more this year ..no problem with moose or caribou ..got lots of both ...

gregrn43 01-14-2009 03:21 PM

RE: cold snap

Our farm we hunt on has million of cedar trees might need to ship you some up there

They (deer) were hit hard here in Ontario as well last year. Wayyyyyyy too much snow. Not as much snow this year but colder. It was -17'F last night and calling for -22'F tonight. Crunchy snow and crunchy buggers cold but not square tire cold yet. ;)

Huntaway
This is probably a stupid question. but what is square tire cold?

cayugad 01-14-2009 03:40 PM

RE: cold snap

When the temperatures are bitter cold the tires get so frozen hard that where they sit on the road, they seem to have a flat spot. So when you go down the highway, they thump until they finally warm up. We always joke about the square tires here too.

Our deer eat cedar. I normally drop three Red Cedars for them and come spring, there are no boughs to trim off as the deer have them eaten off. They yarded early this year because of the snow and extreme cold. I sure hope the timber wolves don't find the yards too soon.

-40 to -50 brrrrrrrrrr[:@]:D
I've had set coleman stoves under my oil pan at that temp to get it warmed up enough to crank.

RE: cold snap

How many of you cold birds have jumped when it gets so cold that some of the nails shift in the house and POPor you are out near the power lines and they start to hum from the cold?

Another cool thing to do is when its bitter cold boil some water on a stove and then take a coffee cup full of it outside and throw that in the air and watch what happens... you can make a cloud. The water just disappears before it hits the ground.

My Dad used to joke it was so cold you have to knock the dogs off the fire hydrants...

It might be time to go wolf hunting. I feel for you fellers up there in all the cold.

i have not seen a deer in my yard in 7 days, i have corn out and nothing, only 1 rabbit too.

Back in the 80's (lol) I woke up in an Army tent while on exercise and it was 55 below. I thought I'd be a good guy and lit the coleman lantern and stove. When I brought it back into the tent, to my horror it was empty!!! Everyone bailed in the middle of the night and left me there to sleep alone. They went and slept in the CP where there were heaters running all night. Maybe it was my snoring????? During that exercise I heard trees snapping in the cold, our rum ration froze darn near solid and we never shut off our vehicles because we wouldn't be able to restart them. We had a bunch of our Southern friends up for that exercise. They parachuted in and when they hit the ground they were frozen stiff. That was the coldest I've ever been.
Except maybe an ice fishing trip........ but that's another story of a young and foolish fisherman.;)

We set a new record low last night in our county of negtive -19F. Two of my friend took advantage of the clear sky and still bright moon and went youte hunting till 3:00 AM. they got 4 youtes, called in 7 and missed 3 of them in 8 sets.
I had to fast for some blood work so I didn't go with them.

Ya deer eat red cedar here. When they(deer)yard up the youtes are close by to pick off some of the smaller weaker ones. We will set up and do fawn distress calls to get the youtes to come in and pop them.

I also would pratiac the 3 s's and shoot some wolves too.

Lefse I feel much warmer now thank you. It's only -19º here and headed for -28º so the weatherman says. He's never right. That North Dakota is one cold snow covered place this year. Even some lutefisk wouldn't help.. :D

only when you try and swallow it Semisane... I was forced as a child to eat that stuff. Being an adult now, I have forbid it in my home. It is not even allowed on the property. Now if you ever ate lefse.. that is really good. I am not talking about the forum member, but the potato bread. Butter and sugar and roll that up... its really good tasting. Then they had to ruin good potatoe bread with that rotten lye fish.

-32 this morning .very strange the cold temp. doesn't bother the deer ,they lie down and conserve heat ..what kills most of them is when the snow gets too deep and they can't get to the foodso they starve to death ..a lot of coyotes will also starve to death the deer population is very low ..so everything balances out ,nature does work wonders sometimes

Cold snap has been waining for the last couple of weeks. I headed to the cabin on Jan 3 & 4 in the Meadow Lake Provincial Park. Daytime highs were -30C. Sunday morning low was -41.7C on the thermometer. Went out sledding on Saturday. Placed a tarp over the 900 and put a couple of electric heaters on just so we could turn it over to start it(pull start). 500 started with a little persuading. Only a couple of people fishing and they indicated fishing was very slow. Only a couple of fish caught all day. Sunday morning we went out early to start our vehicles to make sure we had no problems before we headed home in the afternoon. Old 01 Chev half ton fired right up while the 07 Titan would only start with holding the starter on for a while. Neither of them were plugged in. Got both sleds going again and headed out with the sled with our fishing gear. Nothing but a couple of nibbles. Was better than sitting in the house watching TV. Temps this week hit a low of -25C and are to get to above freezing by the weekend. Nice change.

WOW!! benamen those are some really cold temperatures you have there. It is still -22ºF (9:oo am) which would be -30C in your case here this morning. If Semisane's been reading this post all night, he must be plastered on Scotch by now.. :D

We has -28 Flast night, but they said North Dakota had -44F below last night (the weather channel). That would be -42.2 C in your place.. I don't care what anyone says.. that is just plain cold.

One more cold night they say and then it is supposed to get above zero. Maybe I can shoot this weekend when it gets above zero... You stay warm where you're at. Throw more wood in the stove and have a hot cup of coffee or do you drink tea there?

Johnmorris 01-15-2009 06:24 AM

RE: cold snap

Dave it will take a weel of 30 above to thaw out the wood enough to burn:D:D:D I sure do look foreward to tomorrow -30 here in Chippewa Falls. It is supposed to set records
