Personally, I would get it without the scope. I went shooting with a fellow modernmuzzleloaders member Saturday and he was trying to dial-in his Savage. It was brand new and came with a Simmons scope that was supposedly boresighted. He fired 10 shots and made over 45 clicks in elevation adjustments and still couldn't get it to hit paper. The scope was tite and centered. The only thing we could come up with was that the scope had to be busted. The scope that comes mounted from Cabelas may be different but I wouldn't want to chance it. A ML as nice as the Savage would get a quality scope mounted on it.

The Simmons will not hold up to smokeless charges. Most go with very good scopes on their savages. Zeiss, Leoupuds, etc. I got the stainless Savage about 18 months ago for $550 without the scope, so they have gone up in price a $100 or so. Also interesting to see that they do not list the smokeless capability of the Savage on there. You can do better at Natchez and Bud's Gun shop or Gun Broker if your really looking for one. They are one accurate rifle.

Take a close look at this new Savage... it is not or does not appear to be a smokeless.

It is billed as a Savage 10ML BP Muzzleloader ....

It has this description attached...

Plus, it boasts the accuracy to shoot less than 1.5" groups at 100 yds. with Blackhorn 209, Triple 7, Shockey Gold, or White Hots.
Plus a different feature in that it has a 26" barrel vs the normal 24" barrel..

I am a bolt fan and a non Nitro-Cell fan so it looks really appealing to me - Just gotta figure out where to get the bucks....

They List this gun as a 10ML-BP, for BP&BP substitutes only. The Barell is a 26 inch compared to the 24 inch which comes standard on the smokeless model, and it has a new recoil pad. It may be Savage's attempt to break into the market for people who are gun shy of their smokeless model.

i think savage wasn't to bright for making this. Theres going to be a good deal of new shooters out there that load up a smokeless load in this rifle and blow the hell out of the barrel. The smokeless savage ml10 could shoot the subs so why down grade? Cost certainly isnt going to be that much different. For the price they want i can buy the centerfire/muzzleloader Apex.

This will no doubt add confusion as we know they make an older version that is smokeless and now this is for BP only, well guess what there arevery stupid people who will trysmokeless in this just because it is a Savage This will be a lawsuit waiting to happen. The price should keep people back for some time especially with this economy.I think it is a bad call on Savage's part to go backwards and not allow smokeless in this gun. Great guns butI cannot afford them.

I hear what you're all saying about a lawsuit waiting to happen, but this makes me sad. If somone is so ignorant that they ignore the name, barrel markings, and probably extensive language in the manual and load it with smokeless and blow it up just because the company previously made a product that used smokeless, I think they should be laughed out of court.

Of course, this is America, and they would probably win...

Edited to add - why on earth would I pay that much for a gun that shoots only BP like every other ML?? It's not like you can't work the trigger or accurize many of the other designs, I don't see what it is offering that is unique except an AccuTrigger and they're not THAT good...
