Honestly, I don't think there is a BP only Savage. I think Cabelas boogered up and listed it wrong. Why in the world would Savage do this? If we thought about the problems it would cause, you better believe they did too.

I don't see anything on Savage's site stating tehy have a BP&BP Sub only gun out... doesn't mean that they don't but I tend to agree that w/the legal ramifications, this appears to be a Cablea's marketing slip. Perhaps they can't sell guns that shoot smokeless.... Just a thought.

statjunk- I was thinking the same thing. $$$$$ For that price, why not just buy the smokeless Savage? It seems incredibly expensive for a bolt-action BP-only rifle. Heck, my $120 CVA bolt-gun will shoot 1.5" groups like they are advertising.

I am sure Cabelas is selling this a BP sub gun, notice the powders they had listed all low residue near smokeless powders, not BP, which the Savage can shoot also. They are just marketing it that way, it will still shoot Smokeless, Savage is NOT going to make a weaker gun just for Cabelas and call it the same name. That is crazy. Cabelas is doing this for libility reasons, to say "we only sell substitute guns" not smokeless powder guns. But you see it coming. 10 years from now, nobody will shoot an inline with smoke. They will shoot BH and the competitors White Hot.

The Simmons will not hold up to smokeless charges
Take a close look at this new Savage... it is not or does not appear to be a smokeless.

It is billed as a Savage 10ML BP Muzzleloader ....

It has this description attached...

Plus, it boasts the accuracy to shoot less than 1.5" groups at 100 yds. with Blackhorn 209, Triple 7, Shockey Gold, or White Hots.
Plus a different feature in that it has a 26" barrel vs the normal 24" barrel..

I am a bolt fan and a non Nitro-Cell fan so it looks really appealing to me - Just gotta figure out where to get the bucks....
The Savage home page for MLers:

http://www.savagearms.com/muzzleloader_home.htm

does NOT list the 10ML BP as a model. It is Cabelas Marketing NOT Savage marketing. The 10ML2 will certainly shoot all the substitute stuff. Maybe they did make a special run for Cabelas with the 26" barrel. Seems crazy to me to make a weaker gun, it is certainly more expensive than I have seen.

This comes from Doohan on another site...

I spoke with Savage today and this gun is a special order by Cabela's built to their specifications. Cabela's has a strict NO SMOKELESS POWDER stance and they wanted a gun that would be on an even playing field with other manufacturers.

So there you go.. This is a BP/BP SUB gun.

Interesting.... - but I sure like the looks of the gun...

Very interesting. I would not buy the "BP only gun",but just buy the regular 10ML2. 2" extra in barrel length is only 50 fps or so, nothing to write home about. Then when ya get old and lazy (like me), ya can clean 1 per year at end of the season.

Not saying that you or Doohan are misleading us, but I'm calling BS on what the Savage rep said. As expensive as that gun is, I'm willing to bet it's the same Savage that shoots smokeless. I'm sure people will buy it and shoot BP only and be none the wiser. I just think it's the same gun and Savage and Cabelas are conspiring together so they can sell it as a BP only gun for legal reasons.

I'm glad I'm not a bolt action ML fan. That's just too many $$$$ for me to consider. I alsothink it would have been wiser of Savage to give it a different model number.
