Pics of my SD Muzzleloader buck

On December 19th I set out with my smokepole in hand in search of a mature mule deer buck in SD. The week prior I spotted some nice bucks the day before season but as luck would have it, the opener was a nasty day with gusting winds, blowing snow, and temperatures well below zero. As I returned on the 19th I had hopes of finding one of the bucks that I had seen the days prior. I was able to find a buck that I had a chance at earlier in the season and quickly began to trudge through the snow in hopes of closing the distance to the buck. Little did I know is that I would come across a much bigger buck in the process......I first spotted him at close to 500 yards away, actually he spotted me first and he made sure he put some extra terrain between him and I....when I saw him there was no question that he was a shooter. I didn't have to ask myself if he was a buck that I had wanted! There was no question. So the search began; I finally located the buck after following his tracks over numerous ridges and through many draws, trudging through knee deep snow as I went with temperatures hovering around the 0 degree mark. I finally was able to catch up to him and watched him from 300 yards as he and a spike and doe dug through the snow in search of food. They continued over one more ridge and into a draw. I was sure that he would not leave the next draw. He was relaxed again and went about his normal routine. As I neared the top of the ridge where I last saw the buck I took off my pack and began crawling through the snow paying careful attention that I didn't fill my barrel with snow in the process! When I neared the crest I spotted the deer feeding unaware of the audience they acquired. I pulled my range finder to my eye and read 186 yards. I felt comfortable in the prone position as I readied for the shot. I had sighted the muzzleloader in at 150 yards so I knew I needed to hold a bit high. The fiber optic open sights settled on the buck but he turned away and was now facing directly away. I watched him for 15 minutes before he finally turned and was broadside. The sights became steady again as I cocked the hammer and began to squeeze the trigger. A puff of smoke obscured my veiw. When the smoke cleared I could see him laying on the ground! He dropped in his tracks! I quickly gathered my gear and set off to take a look. I new he would surpass the 180" mark but didn't truely know how big he was until I got him packed out and back to the truck. After putting the tape on him three times I kept coming up with numbers over 190"! The official scoring will take place in 60 days to come up with the final score. He could quite possibly be the biggest typical mule deer killed with a muzzleloader in SD and be within the top few typical mule deer bucksever taken in the state of SD!

Congratulations on an outstand mule deer!!!! And a great write up may I add. That is some outstanding shooting. Open sights at that distance. WOW!! my hats off to you on that shot.

What kind of rifle, projectile and powder charge were you shooting. Also where did the bullet hit, and did it come out at that distance?

That must have been a lot of packing to get that hog out of the back country.. Again, congratulations.

186 yards, with irons, DRT...I love it. Few deer as gratifying as the couple I've done that with, but none of mine could hold a candle to ONE SIDE of that buck!!! I bet you were so excited it wasn't even hard to drag him. Congrats!

WOW, Congrats,
That has got to be one of the most perfect racks I've seen on a mulie much less one heck of a shot. Great story too.
Were you using snow shoe's? I would like to hear more for sure.... I'm in NY and it gets cold here and I will hunt all day in all kinds of weather but my hands get cold if I sit too long. Are you walking and scouting vast terrian w/ a spotting scope and wearing lighter clothes w/ heavy stuff in your pack? Your photograph is supurb! Were you w/ other folks or did you pack the camera in too? Got to have been a heavy pack much less packing the meat out too.
I would love to hear more for sure.
AGAIN Congrats on a hunt of a lifetime!
Steve

Thank you everyone! I couldn't sleep really well last night because I am still on cloud 109! To get such an opportunity at such a fine buck is a dream come true!

I was hunting public land many miles away from any established road. The snow was deep but luckily pretty hard in most places so I didn't have to use my snowshoes much! But when I was in the soft snow it was about knee deep in places where fresh snow had been blown into drifts. I was hunting vast terrain soa good set of Nikon binos and spotting scope was a must.I glass and find a deer that I may want to sneak on and put a plan in place to close the distance. In my pack I carry my spotting scope, tripod, camera, knive set, extra clothes, snacks and water. It was a physically challenging hunt to say the least. The ups and downs of the terrain wore me out that is for sure!

I was using a Thompson Center Endeavor, Shockwave 250 gr. spirebullets/sabots, and 150 gr.of Triple 7 pellets and primers. The bullet entered the buck behind the left shoulder and exited the opposite shoulder dropping the buck in his tracks.

I had sighted in the TC at 150 yards and could consistantly hit a 10 inch target at that range. At 186 yards I knew I needed to hold a hair high and really concentrate on the fundamentals that I learned in the military. When the smoke cleared and he was laying motionless on the ground...........emotions hit me!!

Nice Buck ther Bloomer!!!
Got a question--is mule deer meat any different tasting than whitetail?
Their diet is probably different & I've heard that the meat can taste different than our midwest corn-fed whitetails.

My, my, what a nice nice buck Jared. I hunt the hills myself; have only seen bucks near that nice right here in town around our house. I have never seen a 5 point that was as uniform as yours.

Mark, over the years i have killed and eaten many many deer. I have never eaten a corn fed Whitetail. I have eaten both mule deer and whitetail that lived in the mountains. I don't recall any taste difference. I have eaten both whitetail and mule deer that lived in the foot hills, and had access to winter wheat fields. They may have tasted different than the mountain deer, i can't really say. They did taste good. We mostly hunt for food, in our family, and try to avoid big bucks and big bulls. If we have a full freezer, we like killing big necked bucks, and trading them for sausage. We find the cooking smell of a big necked buck unbearable, and the meat of a big bull like chewing on a boot. Ironically the meat of a big pronghorn is real good. The smell of the pronghorn buck gets on one's hands and is quite overwhelming; seems like it never goes away. It seems weird to me that they smell ok cooking and are tender and have a good flavor.

Jared,
All I can say is still WOW! Great story. Maybe before I'm too old I'll have to try a remote hunt when my son is finally done with his military service. We have talked about it for yrs. I would like to go somewhere west but not where I would get eaten like Treadwell.
Not many aroundcould put it all together like you did. You got the whole package and this will probably be your most memorable hunt for many yrs.
Congrats again,
Steve
