What The HELL???
Snow on my Bananna Trees??? Ain't supposed to happen! I think Cayugad sent it down here thinking that "if it snows in New Orleans, maybe Semisane will buy some Blackhorn".

What a great picture!!! Well we should have some of that here... has not happened yet - but they are promising up to 12" Friday night and Saturday morning - BUT 30mph winds on Saturday - that will not be good.... |
RE: What The HELL???
it worked!!! I called on Marie Labeau and told her that Semisane is not behaving and being difficult about getting some blackhorn powder. And he needed a wake up call and a cool head. So I knocked three times on her headstone, drew three XXX on it, left some rum and a couple cigars, walked around it counter clockwise and whistled.. and there ya go.. Now if you want them trees healthy, get out there and get some of that powder. so ... what's it gonna be there buddy?? |
RE: What The HELL???
Maybe next time I'm at Cabala's I'll open the old walletand -after the moths fly out - see if there's enough in there for a jug of that stuff. :D:D Don't wanna`get in no dispute with ol` Marie!!!

RE: What The HELL???
I watch the Discovery Channeland learn lots
of useful information... Saturday you say??? well that warm weather sounds just fine. Lets hope it warms up for you. I always thought it was just hot and sticky there all year long...Lee.. I had nothing to do with AR. I proclaim my innocence on that one. |
RE: What The HELL???
![]() it's a little brisk this morning.. this one always reads warmer then it really is, so I like it a lot more then the one that tells you the real temperature outside. My other two say 5º ![]() We've only got about six inches on the ground. I sure wish that big lake effect storm would head over here and drop a couple feet of snow for us. Then you can have some real fun. This is my side yard by the kitchen. This is where my grouse all come in to eat... or be eaten.. ![]() |
RE: What The HELL???
No major snow in lower Michigan yet. But this morning was 9 degrees and I had a little crack in my winshield that turned into a two footer over night. Now I need a new windshield.

RE: What The HELL???
:D:D I had to put on an extra jacket just to look at those pictures. Sure is pretty. I've never hunted in snow. Would be interesting to try some day. It must be a heck of a lot easier spotting a deer.
|
RE: What The HELL???
Easier to spot, track, and stalk as the snow gets things nice and quiet. As I am sure Statjunk and other snow bound members know. Also it keeps the less then dedicated hunters, moving around as they hate to stand and shiver. So they push and movedeer. The problem was, there were no deer to push this year. :(
I live in what's known as the snow belt. Its the part of Wisconsin that when you hear... it snowing in Wisconsin. :) its my house they are talking about. The last few years have been mild but we used to average well over 120 inches of snow in a winter. We are no where near as bad as what the Yoopers get in the UP. My neighbor always tells about the year the snow was so deep that the train went by his place and all he could see was the smoke from the engine. The tracks ran along the road, and the snow plowed up off the roads was so high, and the train tracks of course lower then the road bed, hid the train from sight behind the snow banks. |
RE: What The HELL???
We have not had a good snow in this part of OK for about 20 years. Maybe we will get one this winter-hope.
|
RE: What The HELL???
falcon, you are welcome to our ration. But I would rather have snow than ICE.

RE: What The HELL???
Ya'll southern fellows would never camp on a northern fellows door step unless ya'll wanted to end up like a pop sicle. Best beat on the door and hope we let ya'll in.
Sunday morning here we had 6 inches of new snow that started Saturday afternoon. At 6:00AM as I looked at my weather station we had 12F with a wind chill of Negtive -3F wind was from the NW @ 9 MPH. I went hunting but did not open the window on the west side of the blind. Monday evening it started snowing again, turned to rain just after first light Tuesday. Rained till after last light and turned back to snow. Aint any critter that walks or crawls can move in the woods with out every thing in the section hearing it. That crust makes a squirrel sound like a elphant going thru the woods. This morning I saw 18 baldies and heard every one of them coming before I seen them. Every one of them had frost on their backs and icecles hanging from their chins. I'll upload a picture of one in a bit. We have a good 8 inches of snow on the ground despite the rain Tuesday. Supposed to warm this Saturday and Sunday. My brother farther north than me got just over a foot of snow Tuesday. :) Al ![]() |

RE: What The HELL???
The coldest its been so far is only -8.8º so that's not too bad. When you get them -25º mornings that's when it starts to get your attention. Actually the other night be had a walking moon. For those that live in the city, a walking moon is a full moon on snow with little snow cover. Its so bright out that the trees have shadows and you can go for a walk without a flashlight, in the middle of the night.
|
RE: What The HELL???
Well Cayugad,
I can say with zero embarrassment that once it hits single digits temp regardless of wind chill it gets my attention. In single digits I'm good for about 1.5-2 hours in the blind and I'm done. I head out later and leave earlier this time of the year. I'm not even that old so I don't have any excuse. Tom |
RE: What The HELL???
Statjunk.. I hear you on the cold stuff. It's all a matter of dressing for it. My worst part was feet and hands. When they got cold, I got cold.[&:] So I purchased some Sorrel Dominator boots good to -100º and buy yourself a pair of compression socks at Wal Mart. Your feet will be toasty. They are not the best for walking but for stands, blinds, and ice fishing.. they are a must. For hands I have a hand warmer/fanny packand I put those hot packs in there. With good wool clothes, I can last out there in some nasty temperatures if I have to.

RE: What The HELL???
Semisane can now successfully sing "yes, we have no bananas"!! Hope that tree comes back for you.
|
RE: What The HELL???
Banana trees are like crazy relatives - they always seem to come back. Actually, if we get a "hard freeze" (28 degrees) all of those you see in the picturewill die, startgetting mushy, and collapse. The trunks are pretty muchlike a stalk of celery. Come March new sprouts willcome up from the roots and by June they will be 8ft. tall.

RE: What The HELL???
End of February I will be back in class getting assignments from Semi or Sabotloader. So I got time now in between hunting.
|
RE: What The HELL???
Semi.. you think one of them nanner trees would grow in my yard? When I was a kid my Dad grew one in the house, until it got too big and Ma got mad.. That was the end of the old man's nanner tree...
|
RE: What The HELL???
Cayugad, I kow you can grow one. My neighbor here in Ohio pulls his in the fall before frost, winter and spring then moves it onto the deck in summer heat. What you got to watch for inside is bugs it picked up outside. I grow a lime tree like that I bought in anairport. I have Never had limes though. I have had it growing for 6 years now. Started as a twig about 4 inches tall and now is about 4' high and spread about that much.
|
RE: What The HELL???
Buck Hunter.. that's a cool idea.
My Dad (when we were kids) had a pretty impressive tree in the house. Maybe it was the bugs that Ma finally screamed about. He used to drag that outside in the summer. I think we even got little bananas but I would not swear to it. Now he has these 8 foot tall corn plants growing all over his house.. |
RE: What The HELL???
WellCayugad, youcan certainly grow one in a fairly large pot (5 gallons or so) outdoorsduring the summer and bring it indoorsfor thewinter. It would probably go dormant indoors. The container would limit it's size to four or five feet and it wouldnot likely every produce fruit - but I find the plant itself attractive. Also, you would need to keep the soil moist. As for your yard, you may as well try growing a money tree. I can ship you a sprout (banana - not money :D)if you want to give it a try.
|
RE: What The HELL???
Semisane.. I will pass on the offer. I do NOT have a green thumb when it comes to house plants. In fact I am kind of the family joke. My gardens are always over producing, but I can kill a simple fern if someone give me one. My sister gave me a house warming plant. It a plastic one. And I have not managed to kill that yet.

RE: What The HELL???
In a blind I found a small carpet rement does wonders to insulate your feet from the cold ground.
I love woolrich outer wear but have found Columbia coats are great for sitting but noisy fortrying to still hunt. I go back to the woolrich for that. :D Al |
RE: What The HELL???
Speaking of cold snowy weather....
My muzzleloader season was a complete disaster. We made it out to the one mile two track that leads to our camp and got stuck about 500-600 yards down the trail at around 1am. I spent the night digging till about 6am in 17 degree weather. There was about 20 in of snow on the ground and we never should have gone down that trail but we did because it was hunting season. We called some tow companies but they wanted between $500 and $1000 to come get us out. Luckily a friend of ours that is local came to get us in the morning. After sleeping in the truck for about two hours I had to go back to digging again. The truck that came to get us got stuck a few times so we had to dig it out too. We ended up out of the woods around 1pm the next day. Never even made it to camp and never got the smoke pole out of the case. Did I mention that I had the flu through all this. Still have the flu. It wasn't a good time. Tom |
RE: What The HELL???
Statjunk - I don't mean to sit here and snicker but... There is nothing worse then getting stuck in the middle of the woods on a cold night. Been there, done that myself, and got the T shirt.. I have a crazy friend that somehow is under the impression that 4 wheel drive means it can go anywhere. And he's the King of off road driving.
He's got him and I into some of the mostawful back in the middle of no where places, stuck. I refused to go on his rides anymore, as it was about certain we'd get stuck. Being a logger, he owned a skidder so we'd walk out sooner or later, and come back with the skidder, hook on to it and get him self out. One way or anothers. Those were some very memory making and interesting event in my life. Sounds like you got a good snow there. We got only about 12 inches last night so it was not as bad as they were claiming it could be. And its only -7º below this morning. But we are expected to get up to two degrees. So bring on the heat. I think I will wait a while before I go and shovel out. Its a shame you could not have got out and hunted. Although with the flu.. I think you're better off in a warm dry house, in a nice warmbed, reading a good book, and sipping hot tea. ![]() |
RE: What The HELL???
Cayugad,
I learned something really cool while stuck. When the guy came to get us he was able to get himself unstuck with a hand winch. He had this real big 2500 chevy. He strapped the wire from the hand winch around a real small oak like maybe 1.5" in diameter and that was enough to get himself out. My buddy and I were like damn were getting one of those. Yeah instead of in bed I'm at work being incredibly unproductive as you can see! LOL. Tom |
RE: What The HELL???
I have a monster "come a long" (which is what we call a hand winch) with a double pully system on it. It is manual, not electric which is just as good because the battery would probably be dead when I needed it. I've hooked that up and actually pulled cars out of ditches. They are real handy to have in snow country. Mine is behind the seat in my old Ford.

RE: What The HELL???
I carry tire chains for all four wheels and have plowed drifts so deep the snow coming over the hood stopped the windsheild wipers. I also carry a short D handle flat shovel, 2 ton comealong (from TSC) and a couple of 15' 3/8 logging chains in the winter. Normally I stay out of the woods when it is like that with my truck. Thats what the snowmobiles are for. Wouldn't even think of taking my atv out in that.
Still Muzzle loader hunting here. Yesterday I'm not sure if ya could have hit a target 5 feet away with the wind gust going up to 55 MPH. Saw 7 laying on a north faceing hill out of the wind while running the dogs. 11 more were in the pines along side the front yard ![]() untill a rabbit took two of the dogs in there. :) Al |
RE: What The HELL???
WOW!! that's a beautiful picture there Alleyyooper.
![]() this was that snow storm that hit us the other day. I was surprised that the camera could not pick up better detail of thesnow coming down. But I plowed out last night after the storm stopped then ran and hid in the house because it was COLD!! I guess I am not used to the cold like I thought yet. Last night got to -19ºbut there was no wind... So they are talking a high of 0º today that will feel like a heat wave. |
RE: What The HELL???
Dag gum,
It makes me feel so small to run for cover and it's only 13 degrees! Man 20 below. Only experienced that a couple of times. Tom |
