Here is a pic of the optima that blew up on my friend's brother.And he is from Mississippi and not the one that was making rocket fuel,but i could see him trying it if he had thought of it. Lol

Never mind i see the hole now. tiny pics are hard to see until you save them and zoom in.
But someone here mentioned that this rifle used smokeless powder? I hardly can see BP or a sub ripping it open like it is, even with a short started projectile. If this was caused by smokeless powder, take a look at the breech plug, its still in there. |

ORIGINAL: NITEHAWKJS I'm new here and i don't want to start out on the wrong foot, but i do know of one CVA opitma that the barrel blew up on. A Friend of mine's brother had one toexplode on him a couple of weeks ago.He said that he was not shootingbut 90grn of powder and that it was not short loaded.It blew under the scope,tearing it up also it busted one of his ear drums adamaged his hearing in the other ear plus cracked the winshield on his truck as he was shooting it on the hood. He has it posted on the Miss. Dept of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks website Johnny I'll see what I can do about the pics. From what i got from his brother he had shot the gun earlier in the day while hunting and was going to clean it on returning home so he laid it on the hood of his truck to shoot at his range target thats when it exploded. He was shooting a 90grncharge of loose powder I'm not sure what brand withi think he saidpowerbelts bullet again not sure what grn they were. I'll find out for sure tomorrow and repost it. Johnny |

i hve a cva buckhorn magnum with a bergara barrel 0nly 127 bucks at walmart shoots great and i often use a magnum charge.:D

Thetrue accounting of exactly what transpired before that shot would be of keen interest. Perhaps the fellow involved would come here and post his story.

From what I can find - I do not think the Buckhornscome with Bergara barrels... they are the standard CVA barrel. Not all new CVA's have the Bergara barrel. If you look through the CVA sight it will tell you which models have the Bergara http://www.cva.com/rifles-buck.html |

All the details that I have gotten were from his brotherand theyare that it was a 90 grain charge of loose powder either pyrodex or triple7.He said that at times he had used one or the other and a powerbelt bullet.
I also had him to ask to make sure that he hadn't short loaded it,which he said he had not I e-mailed him tonight to see if he would post it here so you could get all the facts straight from him. I know a lot of people who think it may have been human error. I don’t know I wasn’t there and neither were they and all we can go on is what we are told and what our experiences have been and form our opinion from that. Whether we agree or dissagree but strange things do happen. Some may think it was CVA’s fault? Yes it could have been a bad barrel. Do I think everyOptima will explode sooner or later? Absolutely not I have owned and shot them in the past and am considering buying one now from the brother I work with. I guess he is a little gun shy of it now, all things considering. No matter what was the cause I’m just glad that he was not more seriously hurt. From looking at the pictures it could have been really bad. Johnny |

to answer a few ? I loaded 90 gr loose pyrodex,300gr sabot shot once i field,apparent miss never seen any blood or find deer, reloaded same load,yes single load with 90gr checked powder before leaving house,came home decidedto unload,laid across hood of truck and fired,barrel directly above scope bursted blowing half scope 30ft behind me,luckilymissing my head only suffering hearing loss thanks for concern

I am not refering to the tommydavis rifle with that above comment. I am looking at that picture. Did that rifle fail right where the back base mount attached to the barrel? I sure am sorry to hear of your hearing loss, but glad you were not killed by such a thing. |
