I would NOT get wood, too easy to break and drive thru your leg and bleed to death if in the field OR to puncture your complete hand or wrist.

knowing coreys luck, he probably would end up with the broken half stuck in his leg

For wood ramrod you can pretty much order them from track of the wolf and for a range/hunting rod, buy the flexy universal plastic ramrod from cva that you can cutdown to the size you need. I like the wood ramrods when its hanging up but still use them for hunting. Just need to slow down with the wooden rod and make sure you use a ball starter.

so what type of wood? should I get unfinished? remember this is for display only.

I only use wooden ramrods if I have to.

hickory. Later on when you have kids, you can always rely on a good ol piece of hickory to set things straight with them

finished or kit, dont make no never mind. Not hard to put one together.

If it's just for display, go the the hardware store and get a hardwood dowel. Stain it if you want. You can even draw a spiral on it with a felt tip marker, then stain it - looks pretty good.

corey - yes you can order the tips - just google ramrod tips. If you get a dowel, it has to be 3/8".
Also for the spiraling semi mentioned, if you can get a length of cannon fuse and spiral that around and light it, it gives the ramrod aneat look. One of my buddies did this with both his ramrod and stock. Really looked different.

For a 3/8" dowel, you can make the tips with .38 Special or .357 Mag cartridge cases. Knock out the primer. Drill and tap the flash hole for 10-32 threads. Turn down the rim of the case head by putting the case in a power drill and using a file or sandpaper on a wood block. and fit it to the end of the dowel. You can pin it if you want, but I use a little epoxy to hold it and it works fine.

Damn Semi you are going the cheap route. And you know what? I think your wifeIS wrong. You are not totally nuts, just slightly less than 3/4.
