Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
Went to Cabala's today and figured if they had some BlackHorn on the shelf I would go ahead, bite the bullet, and buy some to try in the Mustang(just so Cayugad could say "I told you so").
Walked up to the counter and, sure enough, there were about a half dozen canisters sitting therenext tothe Pyrodex and Triple 7. Asked the guy behind the counter "how much is that BlackHorn powder". He says "what's BlackHorn powder?" Pointing to it on the shelf, I say "that stuff right there, in the kinda` square canister". He picks it up and there's no price on it. So he enters the code in his machine, and says "it's $37.99". With tax, that would be $41.22 for ten ounces, about a half-buck more than what I paid for four pounds of GOEX. Guys, I just could not do it. I left therestill a BlackHorn virgin (but came REAL close to buying an Omega X7 - man that little gun feels good on the shoulder - maybe they'll have an after Christmas sale on them :D). |
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
:D:D:D Semisane went hunting and saw a big buck with a BLACKHORN.. he could not do it.
Well maybe its a good thing you did not make the plunge. Now you have nothing to compare it to and you will never know what your missing. Besides, maybe your Mustang will not shoot the stuff. While I like the powder, I would hate dropping that kind of money too. So just keep shooting Goex. and wonder.. |
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
:DWell Cayugad, you're right. ButI wonder about a lot of things.
I DO wonder if BH would be super accurate in the Mustang, and maybe get me to that magic 1" group with that gun. I also wonder ifmy .25 ACP breechplug will ignite it reliably. And I wonder if my life will be immensely improved if it does, or whether I'dstill just be and old, fat, bald guy punching holes in paper from afar. And I wonder if any deer I shoot at 75 yards with BH will be deader than the ones I shoot with GOEX, Pyrodex, or T7. And I wonder, wonder who - who wrote the book of love? |
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
Semi
Just to help you out... I have Bh - got 2 bottles of it while back - I really want to say 2 lbs of it - you already know that is not true - but anyway I have shot up one bottle - 10oz's and I tried not to waste a single grain... but my Omega is loaded up as we/I type for a short trip in the morning - actually it has been loaded since 10/9 - it is loaded with T7 as i will continue to use it, but I did order another 2 bottles from the local SG store and he orders directly from Western - for FUTURE experimentation... |
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
Wow, Cabela's is really high... I can get it here at Sportsman's Warehouse w/tax, title and tags for $31. I don't blame you at that price. Besides ignorance is bliss, right?;):D

RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
Hey, its different strokes for different folks, no bigger deal than some people using Pyrodex and some using 777.
It has a lot more advantageforthose of us that had crud ring than the ones that did not, and if you already get inch groups then the improvement is only visable at long range. Lee |
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
Yeah thats pricey. If I shot muzzleloaders more than I do, I couldnt pay that price. Now as for that Omega X7. Go for it. I love mine Great little walk around/ treestand gun
|
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
At that price, I'll stay with 777.
|
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
Hey Burntmuch, you got a scope on that X7, or do you use the factory peep? What's your best load and what kind of groups do you get?
And Spaniel, I see you have an X7 too. Same questions. |
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
Semi, I ain't going back to T7 for my inline. Jusyt toooooo nice w/ the BH209. Shoot more, no swab between welll you know the drill.............
|
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
I hear you Buck Hunter. But here's the problem. Last week-end I shot up a little over a pound of GOEX playing around with my .54 Great Plainsand .45 Renegade. The week-end before that I shot up a half pound of GOEX and about a quarter pound each of T7 and Pyrodex in the Mustang. Now if I fell in love with BlackHorn and started playing around with it like thatI would go broke in short order and could not afford gas for the truck to drive to the range. :D
EDIT: Oh, by the way, I can shoot about twenty-five60 grain targetloads of GOEX FFFg under a patched ball in the Great Plains without swabbing and with no loss of accuracy. |
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
Well, I can't find it around me. We only have a Diick's Sporting Goods and they have next to nothing as far as MZ supplies. So, I bit the bullet and payed the $37+ a bottle at that Cabelas in Hammond, IN about three weeks ago. I got two bottles.....I KNOW
But I just had to try it and I didn't only want to buy one if it works out good. What ya do?? |
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
Semisane Ive got a leopuld 2x7 on it. Im shooting BH209 loads so far
100 grains 250 xtps crush rib sabots, just under 2 inches at 100 yards 70 grains 180 grain Gold Dots mmp50/40 sabots right at an inch if I let the barrel cool after the 2nd shot 100 grains 250 grain SSTs crush rib sabot Between 2 & 3 inch groups Ive got some of the new crush rib 50/40sabots & some 200 grain shockwaves to try out , Just cant get to the range. Working for a living sucks Im gonna switch out scopes Ive got a Leupold 2x7 shotgun scope that has a little more Eye relief. This gun is real light, When you get up to the 100 grain loads, recoil is a bit stiff. Ive scoped myself with it twice[:@][:@]. I want to get the scope mount with the built in peep so I can switch back & forth |
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
Thanks BM,I'm afraid I'm gonna` have to get one of those little X7s. Wanted to wait for the after Christmas sales, but I'm getting a little worried. Cabela's no longer shows them on their web site.

RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
I still have 3 box's each of Pyrodex and 777 pelletts.
I need to do some shooting or help someone out with some pelletts |
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
Well, do some shooting - DANGIT! (We need some reports to discuss.)
|
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.

RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
so, she said would beat me half to death, fg said he would finish the job lol
|
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
Well if she's only gonna` beat you half to death,ya` gotta ask yourself "can ahalf dead guy get good groups with BlackHorn?" :D
|
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
semi, I did the math while there.
2 pounds of pyro rs there is 18.99 each, 37.98 for both, with tax is about $41 end of the year closeout at wally world. 3lbs of triple 7 2f is $33 or $40 2 wally worlds in 15 miles of each other already talked to jess about |
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
I'm with you there brother. I plan to buy myself another 25 lb. case of GOEX for Christmas at $10.75 a lb. ($250 a case plus 7.5% Louisiana tax if I pick it up at the distributor in LA). That's a LOT of shooting. For the same price I could buy six and a half 10 oz. canisters of BlackHorn.
|
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
ORIGINAL: Semisane Well if she's only gonna` beat you half to death,ya` gotta ask yourself "can ahalf dead guy get good groups with BlackHorn?" :D I thought it was sold in a 1lb jug. After finding out it's 10oz the thought hasn't even crossed my mind. Tom |
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
I bit the bullet and bought to can of Blackhorn from cabella's in St Paul. I will not shoot anything else in my Encore after shooting it. I got some Montana extreme cleaner 3 patches 1 dry patch barrel clean. Breech plug removed with fingers cleaned up just a quick with a Q tip and patch. I am sold and the accuracy was great. I just won't shoot it as much!! More time to shoot the flints
|
RE: Failed Again. I Just Could Not Do It.
I'm sold on it for my Encore as well. But it is expensive! Then again, I must not shoot as much as many of you guys so price doesn't bother me too bad. I've got some Pyrodex and T7 pellets I'll probably never shoot again.
As far as shooting deer, I can attest to the fact that BH209 kills deer just as dead as T7 or Pyrodex, at least at 50 yds.:D |
