RE: TC Firestorm question after day at the range
First off shooting 777 with #11 cap is not a good idea 777require a hotter flame than black or pyrodex and is a lot more likely to give a hang fire or miss fire , Second pellets are for inlines use black or pyrodex loose in a cap lock.
Third run something like a pipe cleaner through from the nipple to the barrel there is some times shavings caught in that channel [ yes TC has that problem too] I have had a number of guns that had ignition problem from this brought to me; after clearing that channel make sure you scrub the gun well and carefully, you do not want gouges in your barrel from ashaving being shot down it. Lets us know how you do with it, we all learn all the time. Lee |
RE: TC Firestorm question after day at the range
"I also bought (but didn't install) a new hot shot nipple due to the recomendation of my buddy after all the misfires we had today."
If it is a flint lock what is he doing with a hot shot nipple? Is his buddy not to bright to recommend a hot shot nipple for a flint lock? I think not since he was looking at the thing. "Shot a total of 15 rounds and only one went off without pouring powder into the nipple." Also if it is a flint lock wouldn't youalway put some powder in the pan? :) Al |
RE: TC Firestorm question after day at the range
Well rob, if its a flintlock you must have some loose black powder that you're using in the pan. Just use that for the load also so long as its FFg or FFFg (if itsFFFFg powder do NOT use it for the main load).
What are you using in the pan anyway? I'm still confused about your plans to change to ahot shot nipple. Flintlocks have a flash hole, no nipple. |
RE: TC Firestorm question after day at the range
Well it sounds like while he might not have his terminology down, he has a great rifle. Flintlocks work best with loose BLACK powder. I have a Black Mountain Magnum and while it CAN shoot pellets, I will guarantee you it will never see them unless someone wants to buy them for me.
Start it out with 85 grains of powder and a roundball or try some powerbelts. I will be it is a good shooter. Also keep your flints sharp. A dull flint will not throw good spark. Good luck with your rifle. And semisane... ![]() |
RE: TC Firestorm question after day at the range
Whichever ignition it is DO NOT USE T7 Pellets... they are hard to ignite and need 209 primers to fire properly. Follow your Owners Manual. It doesn't sound like your friend is that knowledgable... once you get a handle on what will ignite consistetly then you can begin experimenting! Good luck...

RE: TC Firestorm question after day at the range
Check out page 12 of the handbook link belowand you will see what the gun is requiring. Putting a shot of the goex FFFFg here was what I was doing andinstead of using pyrodex pellets I was using triple 7 pellets. Any difference/comments in the two pellets other than the ease of cleaning with 777?
http://www.tcarms.com/assets/manuals/current/FireStormManual_CL_and_FL.pdf You are right about the hot shot nipple not being correct. He was here today and after seeing it said he was wrong in his thinking but never saw a flintlock that asked for the goex to be placed directly in the touchhole. |
RE: TC Firestorm question after day at the range
I am wondering that because of the fact that rifle will shoot pellets if you have to create a "fuse effect" by putting the powder into the touch hole and then drawing it away like that.
In my flintlocks I never get the touch hole filled or it will "fissle.. boom!" I prime away from the hole. Also maybe the touch hole is different on the firestorm then say my hawkins. I was always going to buya firestorm but never did. Instead I bought two of their Hawkins as I liked them better. I bet that is a good shooting rifle.. |
RE: TC Firestorm question after day at the range
shot some respectable groups for my first time at 50 yds. had one hanger that got me to peek resulting in a pretty low result but other than that it was the most fun I have ever had on the range. learning from others seems like the way to go with flintlocks besides the need for shooting, shooting and more shooting.

RE: TC Firestorm question after day at the range
Cayugad is correct about the fuse effect of putting powder in the touch hole. I think it is TC's way of making a duplex load when using pellets. The breach plug has a cone on the inside upon which the pellets sit and the powder inthe touch hole fills in the space. If you use powder rather than pellets the space around this cone is already filled with powder so you don't have to pour powder in the touch hole. With loose powder the Firestorm works like any other flintlock.
