White UMag Front Sight Question

Hi Guys- who has done some front sight mods to their UMag?Here in WA state it's iron sights only.So my aging eyes and iron sights don't work so well together.I changed out the UMag rear sight with a Lyman peep, and likewise changed out the front sightusinga Marble white bead (1/16" I recall), but I'm still having a hard time with sight picture on more distant targets. I think a simple blade front sight would work better but I haven't found one at the usual online places (Midwayusa, Midsouth, etc).Anyone make similar front sight tweaks and if so what did you use?

thank you!
phil

I am wondering if the RMC "V" peep site might not serve you better than a real peep sight??? One of the knocks of peep sights are low light conditions.

The other option for the front might be a fiber optic front sight. You can get different sizes of piping to reduce the covrage of an animal at long ranges...

Just sharing some thoughts...

Some times a picture helps try this site.
There is also another option, In states where I can not use a scope so my poor old eyes can focus I put a Ghost peep in back and a shielded home made front ring peep in front this lets me focus on the target and avoid the problems my tri focals cause. Lee

Umag has a round barrel. RMC might have one that would work http://rmcsports.com/catalog.htm

RE: White UMag Front Sight Question

I replaced my stock front sight on my Umag with a Lyman 17AHB globe sight. It is about the same hieght as the stock blade and has 7 different inserts to choose from. I also have the Lyman peepfor the rear sight.I posted some shooting results with it on this thread http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2949769including a rough picture through the sights showing the front insert I have in there right now.

Those sights are either Marbles or Truglo. Try a Twilight appeture or no appeture at all. My brother likes the Twilight and I prefer no appeture (like a ghost ring). The fiber optic fronts can be helpfull although the one that came on the UMags and M97s have too big a bead. I like the smaller beads myself.

The Ghost sights from William are like 79 dollars, the RMC Vpeep was $29, and both did the same thing. If your looking for function and value, go the Vpeep, I don't know the advantage of the Ghost sight over the Vpeep.

RE: White UMag Front Sight Question

I wonder if the v-peep blade would fit in the original Umag rear sight? That would be cheaper yet.

RE: White UMag Front Sight Question

Thanks to everyone responding here! I actually like the rear peep now - my issue is I can't get a consistenly sharp front sight aiming edgealigned to the target everytime. I can also quickly unscrew the Lyman insert and make a pseudo ghost ring out of it in a couple seconds. Of course, lower light situation means my effective range drops too.

dmurphy317- I don't know how I missed your post! The Lyman 17AHB front sight setup looks like it should work for me. I'm so used to shooting with a blade front sight ... If I don't find a blade front sight to use soon, I'll pick up one of the Lyman 17AHB models and give it a try.

thanks again,
phil

I have your same problem, an I am old too, so trust me on this, for target shooting use a SMALLER peep even a target type apperature, The front sight will clear right up I have to use a peep on my U-M for elk hunting ,when I hunt I use a regular twight apperature, when you sight in on a animal the sights will not be blurrie because you will be looking at the animal as you should be. Also use very large targets 16" or more your eye's will focus on the center of the target and you will be surprised how well you will shoot.

RE: White UMag Front Sight Question

Philnie,

One of the inserts for the #17 is a fine post similar to a blade. With the globe around the center it makes lining up a lot easier in my opinion. You end up with 2 concentric circles with the blade tip in the center. With the center circle insert I have on mine right now, the center hole is roughly the size of the chest of an elk at approx. 200 yards.

RE: White UMag Front Sight Question

With the williams and lyman reciever sights you don't have to do anything other than remove the appeture to turn them into a ghost ring. Just take the thing out and look thru the threaded hole. Don't get any cheaper than that.

RE: White UMag Front Sight Question

Redclub- thanks for the tip on using the smaller Lyman insert! Even though the overall picture looked a bit fuzzy, the front post and target was way more clear ... I managed to shoot my best 100yd 3shot group using it this morning.I forgot your advice to use larger targets - will pick up a couple of the life sized deer targets and practice using them during the next range session (or two if I have time).

dmurphy317- I went ahead and ordered the Lyman #17 front sight and may have time to switch front sights and re-sight it in before ML deer season opener ... did you use the stock White front sight ramp or?

thanks again guys!
phil

RE: White UMag Front Sight Question

Yes, I just replaced the front blade with the #17. It just slides right in to the dovetail in the front ramp. The base of the #17 is somewhat wider than the ramp but it still fits fine and works well. Good luck with it.
