How many guns can actually shoot a magnum charge (150) accuratly?

Most Encores and TC Omega can, Knight Disc, Savage 10ML2can no problem. In factyou will see most rifles sold now days advertise they they can shoot up to 150g of 777. I use to shoot 150g 3 pyrodex pellets in my Knight and my TC Omega, so I know first hand, until I got educated by this board (Cayugad and Sabotloader primarily is who I owe my education to on hot loads and Powerbelts--but several others also, I could NOT figure our why I was loosing deer with 150g loads in a TC Omega at 30 40 and 50 yards with PB). The question is what does that get you shooting a magnum charge, take a look at my "How to Use a Ballistic Program Thread", here:

and see what it means to go up in bullet speed by 100fps and how that impacts arc out to 150 yards,

With high charges with some bullets pancake them out or fragment on close shots, not good, for back east woods hunting. High charge shot accurately with a premiuum bullet is killing out to 175 yards with 3" high at 100 yard zero. So if you shoot high charge accuratelyWITH premiuum bullet your OK, with fragmenting bullet your not OK. You loose accuracy if your recoil sensitive with 150g charge.

My longest deer kill has been 32 yards with a bow. Most gun shots are less than that!! So I will need no more than 75 yards.....2 pellets and a good bullet should work for me?

I suggest a bit different view point,there is a minimum thats true but the real key for unknown situation that might developeis consistant tight grouping, if you can placethe shot exactly where you need it to be, then you will get the best results. Now in my view there is a systematic way of getting to that point and you start by shooting the load that the gun will shoot best. A rifled barrel vibrats or whips if you prefer in a circle because of the twist applied to it when it spins the bullet, it has been shown that if the bullet exits the barrel at the exact point that it was at rest [ie the end of the circle] that is the point at which it will shoot the tightest group and be most consistant. The best way to find this point is to find the sabot that fits right [I believe that there are 7 different ones] but only one will normally shoot under an inch and useing loose powder start at 70 or 80 gr and work up until you know what the best group your gun can achive with that bullet and that powder keep good records and throw out any thing that might be human error. Finding the right sabot and I do a lot of this at home you can take out the breach plug and push them through an inline if they are not tight they wont shoot good if they are so tight you want to pound on them they probly wont shoot good.Study the powders and there advantages and disadvantages [they all have them, the disadvantage of the best one is price] do the same for bullets it will narrow things down to where they are practical. People who think that getting amuzzle loader to shoot really well is easy are usually mistaken. Lee

two pellets and a good bullet and you are good out to 150 up to and including elk sized critters.

but then, 100 grains of loose powder means I can afford to shoot lots for times for the same price and taylor my load easier.

Most all of the new inlines can shoot 150 grains loads. Some require that it be in pellet form. Will they shoot it accurate? If you play with enough loads, I am sure you will find one projectile that will shoot accurate.

The question is ... why do you shoot 150 grains of powder. Do you do so because you can or because you like the recoil? Most of the Knights, and T/C rifles will shoot magnum charges with good accuracy. Now they make scopes to complement the 150 grains rifles. Heck of a sales pitch in my book.

I shoot 70 grains of 3f powder and a 460 (or bigger) conical.

Shot 2 deer with magnum charges at 146 and 148Yrds with 150 and 120g pyrodex Loose powder and a 295 and 245 powerbelt. Completele pass throughs. Magnum loads were meant for LONG distance shooting. IMO, mag loads are just a waste of money and unburnt powder.

My tc omega kicks hard enough as it is with 80g pyro p and a 370 maxiball. Scope smacking your forehead hurts even worse.

2 pellets and a good bullet will work for you, but I believe Lee is right on in his accuracy is king statements and loose powder allows you to get the best accuracy out of your gun, that may be 90g, it may be 110g, now you can buy some 30g pellets and some 50g pellets and experiment with 2 50g, 3 30g and 2 30g + 1 50g also and 80g of 1 50g and 1 30g. Loose powder is 1/2 the cost and a lot better for iginition and much easier than what you think. You can buy a simple measure for $5 and your on your way with loose.

I have a measure and will buy some loose, but is Pyrodex or T7 better? Someone said the Shockey powder was horrible......

Knight/Barnes bullets are what I'm after first. I reload Barnes X bullets in my.338and like them.

i prefer pyrodex due to it being a lot more consistant for me.
