Playing With The GP Flintlock
I had a nice range session Sunday with the GP flintlock. Shot up the last of my black powder, a half can of GOEX FFg.
The 1/2" flint I had in the gun (which was hitting low on the frizzen but sparking real well)broke in half on the fifth shot. Replaced it with a 3/4" flint and shot with that one for the rest of the day. I used the FFg powder in the pan for all shots with no problem. If it was slower than the FFFg I used in the first two range sessions, I sure couldn't tell the difference. I'm prettyhappy about that because I see absolutly no need to worry about trying to find (or make)someFFFFg "priming powder". I had the Lyman 57 peep on the rear, and the Lyman fiber optic "hunter" on the front for the first ten shots. Then I put the wide blue factory blade back of the front and found I could get a much better sight picture on the target with a 6 o'clock hold. Had lots of fun. Anyway, here's the best target of the day - bench rest of course.  |

WOW!!! now that is some shooting... and a good strong load as well. Nothing would dare come close to that rifle if it wanted to live. How do you like these old powder burners now?

Very impressive with any gun much less a flintlock. I think you are a tad more than semisane.

How do you like these old powder burners now? Yeah, It's a strong load. I was really bummed out that the battery on my chrono was dead. I really would like to know what that load is doing. What's a good 100 yard load for a .54 ball anyway? Except for my very first two five shot groups with this gun - one with 85 grains, and one with 90 grains - all of my shooting has been with 95 grains. I know that's overkill for target work (but it's fun), but what about hunting? |

Package arrived today - do not know how you got all of that in the envelope - but greatly appreciated and will get holes punched in them.. thanks - mike OK now the important stuff - tell me what projectileand how much powder you were shooting to create that awesome target... please!!?? |

You're quite welcome, Mike. As for the load, it's all recorded on the bottom of the target. Shows up well on my screen, but maybe not everyone's.
Anyway, it's the 223 grain .530 Hornady ball, over 95 grains GOEX FFg with an .018 patch lubed with Eastern Main Shooters Supply "premium lube" and a Remington Wonder Wad. Distance was 50 yards from a bench. Followed up with Cutty Sark over ice during the post shooting clean up. |

Glad you are haivng good luck with yours. I took mine out today finally and found out that it does not like cold weather and gets so much wet build up in the touch hole that i have to take it inside, pull the lock and touchhole liner and dry everything out. I was finally able to get it off after 5 pans of priming powder[:@]
Just for Chits and grins i took that old 51" long barrel smoothbore musket out to see how it would react and i had one flash in the pan due to me using to little of powder. That smoothbore was 4" high @ 58 yards with 70 grains FFg Goex, .015 patch and a home cast "early today" .530 roundball. The two shots i took measured 2" They just dont make'em like they used to :( |

That's a good 100 yard load as well. I shoot 90 grains of Goex 2f in my Lyman Trade Rifle and while not that accurate will shoot real close. Also with that same 90 grain load, at 52 yards it will shoot a ball length way through a deer and break the back leg on the ride out. That would be a real good hunting load you have there. And I am like you, what's good for hunting is good for fun too...
