RE: Playing With The GP Flintlock
90 grains is a good load. i was shooting that today and the patches looked like you could reuse them. The best thing, its hardly felt when you pull the trigger on the GP.

RE: Playing With The GP Flintlock
I shoot 80gr FFF Goex in my .54 for hunting...I used to use as much as 120grs, backed down to 100, then finally 80...With a round ball and open sights all you are really trying to do is find a good flat shooting load out to 100-125 yards, that's as far as most need to be shooting at deer anyway...Another 200fps at the muzzle with a round ball won't equate to another 200 fps at 100 anyway...

RE: Playing With The GP Flintlock
My Lyman BP book lists a .535 ball (230 gr), .015 ox yoke patch, cci #11 cap @
90 gr 2f goex mv 1480 fps, me 1119 ft lbs, 100yd vel 978 fps, 100 yd energy 488 ft lbs 100 gr 2f goex, mv 1517 fps, me 1176 ft lbs, 100 yd vel 990 fps,100 yd energy 500 ft lbs I suspect the flinter would be somewhere close to that??? edit: 32 inch barrel w/ 1:60 twist |
RE: Playing With The GP Flintlock
This is kinda changing the subject, but look at those figures of 90 vs 100gr...
37fps difference at the muzzle and only 12 fps difference at 100 yards...So the lower powder charge save you powder and a deer will never notice the 12 fps difference...Actually, that's why I settled on FFF and 80 grains, I get plenty of power and save powder with each shot over my old 100gr load... |
RE: Playing With The GP Flintlock
Good point, hawkeye. How do you have your sights set? Zero at 50, or 75, or 100? Have you ever done your own trajectory testto see how much more drop you get with 80 grains vs. 100 grains?

RE: Playing With The GP Flintlock
I set my sights up about 20 years ago, after I built the gun...I set up 2 inches high at 50 yards, and I'm about an inch low at 100...Now initially I used 100grs Goex FF...Since then I changed to Goex FFF, I can't tell a difference...
