A "LOL" Sight For The Great Plains

Although I have both a Lyman peep sight on the way from a forum member andsome Lyman fiber optic "Hunting" sights on the way from Dixon's, I got to thinking about how much I like thehome made"LOL Hardware Store Sight" onmy Zouave. Remember that one?

Well, thought I would take a shot at making one for the.54 Great Plains flintlock.

I used the factory buckhorn sight as a base and a 3/8" nut and bolt for a little trimmer package(instead of the 1/2" stuff I used on the Zouave). I modified the nut and bolts the same way as before, then cut the buckhorn off of the factory sight, soldered the modified nut to the tang of the factory base, blued the whole works, and VIOLA!, another hardware store sight. I haven't shot with it yet, but the next range session should be interesting with three different sights to try.

Here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure.

First - the factory sight.

That is really cool... I would think with that peep sight further down the barrel us bifocal guys could focus the rear and front sight real easy. Also because of the different aperture opening size, it would be more of a ghost ring effect and a target peep. Very nice job. I will be interested to see how you do on the range with it.

Maybe I should send you my sight off the Lyman Trade Rifle and you could make me one like that.. :D:D

When I look through it the front sight is really sharp, as is the target. It's a bifocal eye's dream. In good daylight the 1/8" aperture gives you a really fine sight picture.

Took it out at dusk yesterday evening and sighted on my neighbor's dog about 60 yards away with none of the inserts in place, just the 3/8" nut. Man, it looked good, except the blue front sight was a little hard to pick up. I suspect the LOL rear sight and a fiber optic front sight will be just the ticket for hunting. Can't wait for the next range session - probably next week end.
