RE: A Flintlock Virgin No More!
Well DANG! It's Noon already, and I promised my wife I'd be home by mid-afternoon. Time for one more five-shot string. Decided to go back to 90 grains and move the target out to 75 yards. Here's the results. Yeah, I'm still grinning.

RE: A Flintlock Virgin No More!
Looks like 90 grains is a good load.
It wouldn't be too "traditional", but I think you can get fiber optic sights for that barrel. I put a f/o front on my T/C NewEnglander, and it helped my aging eyes so much I broke down and bought a f/o rear sight to go with it. Haven't tried it with the new rear sight yet, but the f/o front shrank groups to 1/2 of what they were before. |
RE: A Flintlock Virgin No More!
man my should hurts reading this. good shoting.
I still think your wife is wright about ya [8D] |
RE: A Flintlock Virgin No More!
That is some real good shooting there semisane. It looks like the flash of the flintlock does not bother you, which is a good start. Also it must have a fast lock time because you are not getting flinch shots... Overall for a first time out you did real well. And it looks like you must have had a lot of fun doing it or you would not have shot that much.
How often did you swab the barrel when you were shooting? Also if you have some Goex 2f give that a try as the main charge. You might really find some results you could live with. My .54 Lyman liked the 2f better then the 3f. |
RE: A Flintlock Virgin No More!
Hey wabi, I'm not all that concerned about the traditional thing (a scope on a flintlock may be going too far though :D).
I've shouldered guns with fiber optic sights in gun shopsand they just seem to blur out on me. Don't know if that's an effect of the flourescent lighting, or not. A guy in our hunting club has a .22mag with FO sights. I may try to talk him in to taking the scope off so I can try the sights on the range a little bit. I really think this Great Plains will shoot if I could get a decent sight picture. May have to try the Lyman peep sight. |
RE: A Flintlock Virgin No More!
Thanks cayugad. Flash??? What flash? Are they supposed to flash?? :D
Actually, I was having so much trouble getting a good sight picture and concentrating so hard on that dang front sight that I hardly noticed the flash. Also, all of that shooting was from a bench with a pretty steady rest. I swabbed between every shot with both sides of one damp patch (Butch's Bore Shine) and both sides of one dry patch. I do want to try some 2f, but am not too worried about experimenting until I get the sight thing worked out (Lyman peep?). I may be kidding myself, but I believe this gun would produce verysmall groups at 50 or 75 yards for me if I could just get a sharp sight picture. I had a ball with this sucker. Lots of things I want to try - 2f for one, plus more loads with the REAL (I was surprised at how good the one group I shot was from the round ball barrel), and shooting balls without the Wonder Wad, and shooting without swabing, and shooting over the chronograph, and, and, and.......... |

Used to be a Rebel - now I'm just an old fart shooting muzzleloaders. ;)

RE: A Flintlock Virgin No More!
Heres a little clue for you then..If your having trouble focusing
on the sights..Move the rear sight forward about 2 inches.. You will have to probably have a new dove tail cut.... But it works..Makes a big difference.... |
RE: A Flintlock Virgin No More!
ORIGINAL: Semisane Well guys, I had my first range session with the new .54 Great Plains flintlock. WHAT A HOOT! First time with a new gun, shooting range to myself, andperfect weather - temperature in the high 60's, cloudless sky, a very light breeze you could barelyfeel on your cheek. GETTING READY: I've been doing a lot of forum surfing on flintlocks, Great Plains rifles, round ball shooting, etc., to get ready for the first session. The GP comes with a saw cut agate flint, but there seems to be a consensus that black English flints were the best, so I got some of them from Track of the Wolf. Bought two boxes of Hornady .530 balls. Already had a good supply of .018 patch material for the Zouave, and it seemed to be just right for the GP. Bought a 4 oz. container of Eastern Main Shooting Supplies' "Premium Lube" (I think someone on HuntingNet recommended it - whoever you are, thank you). Ran across a deal on Remington pre-lubed .54 caliber Wonder Wads a Gander Mountain, packs of 50marked down from $3.97 to 97 cents - bought ten packs. And finally, a fresh can of GOEX FFFg donated by a friend (can't buy the stuff anywhere in Louisiana). The GP comes with an extra tall front sight, so I pretty well figured it would shoot low right out of thebox. So I stacked two targets so I could aim at the upper one with the hope of hitting the bottom one. It worked. Here's what the target board looked like. |
