RE: Over powder wad or cornmeal?
mcawful, the 20gr by vol. should do it. You might also try felt wad I have had very good luck with them in good barrels. I use the felt stripping they use for weather seal from the hardware store and cut my own with a 1/2 indh wood plug cutter also from a hardware store. You can also get different size cutters from some of the shot gun supply places like Dixie gun worksor the Possables Shop if you wish to buy them. The felt wads work best for me if they are a bit oversized and greased with bore butter.Lee

RE: Over powder wad or cornmeal?
I just bought some T/C bore buttons I htink they are called for my New Enlgander. I am going to try them with Maxi-balls, maxi-hunters and Great Plains Conicals. I have asked before but do you put them down on top of the charge first or put them halfway in and load the bullet on top? Basically, what is the best way?

RE: Over powder wad or cornmeal?
I pour the powder in and it there is a little bullet lube on the bottom of the bullet then I stick it to the bottom of the bullet. Or I just stick it in the bbl then load my bullet. Seat everything, cap and have at it!!

RE: Over powder wad or cornmeal?
You can make your own bore buttons for a .50 caliber with a 1/2 or 9/16th hollow hole punch. Then get some construction wool felt at the lumber yard. This is the stuff they put around your doors and windows for insulation. I like to get the wide stuff.
If you want to purchase excellent quality bore buttons at a reasonable price, call 1-317-933-3441 the company is called Flintlocks Inc. John & Anne Eder make bore buttons and sell them lubed or unlubed. I get the unlubed. They are much cheaper them most of the other online stores. For information and prices, email them at [email protected] (information taken off their business card). |
RE: Over powder wad or cornmeal?
I don't see any difference between seating the wad first or putting it in the barrel a little and then seating the bullet and wad at the same time.

RE: Over powder wad or cornmeal?
Almost all of the time for me and a wide varietyof bores,a wad under a PRB or a conical will not only give greater accuracy, but also allow for a heavier powder charge as the wad protects against gas-cutting.
Here is a great link to make your own wads. You need a punch, felt and lube. I use the durofelt. www.durofelt.com. Also for lubing your newly cut wads, put them in a shallow bowl and then pour melted bore butter over them then remove after cooling.
