Bullet damage when loading
I thought this was interesting and would get you guy’s opinion. When I was trying to find an easy loading bullet for my daughters CVA Mag bolt I took the breech plug out and using a (Super Rat) Rotating Accuracy Tool attached to my range rod pushed different bullets through the barrel . Look at the damage to the PR dead center 175gr bullet when it came out. How much is this going to effect the group? I know these are soft lead but I would hope for no damage. Maybe I can reshpe or glue some felt on the end of the tool. I am not sure if the picture will come through good enough |
RE: Bullet damage when loading
Isn't that an all lead bullet? I have dumped Barnes , Nosler and TCSW and none of them have any marrks. I do use the TC part for loading that stylebullets.

RE: Bullet damage when loading
Any of these types of bullets do require that you load them with a special tool so as not to crush the tips. I think that by loading it the first time you may have done this and not by just pushing out the load. I have never seen this on the Shockwave bullets I use with the attachment. You may want to get one of these or similar. I don't think your groups will be affected much, and to prove it load up your daughters gun with a new bullet loaded with a proper jag and have her shoot it then add this bullet in your photoand have her shoot it but don't tell her about the bullet so as she doesn't do anything fancy and see if it groups the same. Just mix it up and see. Does this bullet shaping happen each time it is unloaded or is the first time this has happened?

RE: Bullet damage when loading
I don't care what type of bullet you use if you create damage to it in any way it will effect that bullet in some way and most of the time it is in accuracy, it may not be much or it could be alot it just dependson what kind and how much damage has been done.

RE: Bullet damage when loading
Never checked for damage before. I don't use this bullet in her gun but I shoot it in my Omega. There has to be some damage when I seat the bullet if there is some damage just pushing it through. They shoot good 1-2 inch groups in my Omega but maybe I can do better.

these are a pritty Expensive bullet arn't they? IMO I think you would do alot better with a 200gr SST with 100 or 110gr of powder alot of guys have reported back with sub 1" groups with this load and some long range kills also. 20 of the SST will run aboght 14.00 |
RE: Bullet damage when loading
I buy in quanity (120-240) and they are usually less than $1.00 ea, but yeah there a little $:(. They shoot well but I am alwasys playing, I have some 200 SW and might try those also. If the weather cooperates now is when I shoot.

RE: Bullet damage when loading
With long nose pure lead bullets you would have to have a a jag type loader with the inside turn to exactly fit the whole front end of the bullet to avoid getting the ring, if you are going to that much trouble why not go all the way and swedge your own; the cost of those are like pb's unbelieveable for what you get. RE: Bullet damage when loading
Don't have the setup to make them. Probable shoot only 20 shots a year. Still haven't settled on a bullet for my Omega but I like this one. If I get where I am shootining a lot, probably won't shoot these too $$$

RE: Bullet damage when loading
Why are you using 2 sabots Dead Center comes with the orange sabot the picture shows the orange sabotinside a black sabot.
I shoot the 240gr Dead center in my Knight. If I am getting any bullet damage It is not effecting my accuracy they shoot real good groups. Mine load real easy in my gun don't usually use a short starter.does yours load hard in your gun |
RE: Bullet damage when loading
They don't load real hard. Not as easy as powerbelts but not as hard as Shockwave or Barnes. These are Duplex Dead Center .357 , 175 gr bullet.

I used to shoot the Duplex 195s, but when I got my Omega I also got a Super Rat and started loading with that instead of the nylon pushers that the DC bullets are mailed with...after all, PR was recommending the RAT! I got disappointing accuracy and went to the 200SW. Now I'm wanting to test if this is the reason. |
RE: Bullet damage when loading
I need to fix/check the bullet damage problem (I have some ideas) and retest for accuracy. I get decent about 3"-4" goups @150yrds with good conditions. I have shot some 2" groups at 150but only sometimes. I need to shoot more to have enough data to make a decision. The weather needs to cooperate. I have some 195 also but I have more 175, also 200 and 250 shockwave.

I know they are suppose to work and probably do most of the time, but to me duplexing a sabot really could lead to problems. Just shedding one sabot can be a problems at times when you start adding in all the varibles that exist when we are shooting or hunting. It takes so little contact with a sabot to really move a bullet off course - but when you have to shed two I am thinking you are compounding the problem.... there is a certain amount of cohesion amoung parts no matter what you do... well anyway hope it all works out for you... |
RE: Bullet damage when loading
I had the same concerns about a doulble sabot -So far so good - decent groups - great trajectory - shot 4 does this year with this combo. Got pass through's on all shots (80-120yrd ranges). All double lung but good blood trails exept one heart shot. I'd like better bullet performance - deer ran 100-200 yrds but it is a muzzleloader and not a high power rifles. I am still not sold on this bullet/sabot combo but it works untill I can find something better.

RE: Bullet damage when loading
I had the same concerns about double-sabotting but I will tell you I don't now. I shot the 195gr DC duplex sabot for two hunting seasons. It shot MOA out to 300 yards and I didn't have any issue with flyers. I killed a lot of deer with that bullet and never had a problem with any shot going where it was not supposed to. However it works, it works!

RE: Bullet damage when loading
You can't eat that!!! 3" at 300 yds is a great group from any rifle blackpowder or centerfire. I can get 1" @ 100 but I have never been able to get the 3" @ 300 yds. Thats great shooting.

Here are some commnets from spaniel in another thread... I initially tried every single weight of Dead Center bullet with it, and the 200 and 250 SWs. The DC bullets are nice but I could not push them over 1800 fps before they lost accuracy (I know a lot of people with this issue, must be the soft lead). The BC of the 200SW is a little lower but is more than made up for by pushing it to 2100fps. |

HEAD0001
I have not specifically used it with a Barnes - but with every other bullet I have used including the BullShop conicals it works great.... Not trying to take any business away from Spin-Jag because they are great people TC is now making a spinning jag on their long supperjag. I bought one at Sportsman's the other day and it fits everything I have very well... $6.70 i think was the price ![]() https://secure.tcarms.com/store/index.php/action/item/id/277/prevaction/category/previd/33/prevstart/54/ |
RE: Bullet damage when loading
ORIGINAL: HEAD0001 If buyingonly one I'd get the "original" spinjag, as it can be used for loading and cleaning. I have both the loader and original, while the loader sits on my range rod full-time I honestly haven't seen a great benefit to it over the original in terms of accuracy or loading in general. I see a big benefit to the "original" for swabbing/cleaning and works great for loading so it sits on my ramrodsmaking allthe hunting trips;). I continue to support/promote Gunn's Spinjag's b/c IME they have been so great to deal with. A commodity that seems to be lacking in this day and age. |
RE: Bullet damage when loading
Thanks guy's. Good advice. The bullet deformation was the only problem I was having with my Knight. LRH. Now that I have that problem solved it should shoot a one hole group:D:eek::D:eek::D. Tom.
