barrel twist
Would i be able to shoot sabots with a 1:48 twist barrel or should i stick with conicals and roundballs?
Thanks |
RE: barrel twist
Sabot will work in some guns, try the shortest bullets they will match the twist best, with short bullets and heavy loads I was able to get 2.5 and 3 inch groups ;not as good as a gun thats built for sabots but usable hunting accuracy. Lee

RE: barrel twist
Only your rifle will answer that for you.. and it might take a lot of experimentation. In my 1-48 twists I normally shoot roundball or conicals. Sabotloader on the other hand has had some excellent results pushing plastic out of his.

I have several 1/48 twist ML's and I shoot sabots out of all them, even the 54's... but I have exactly the opposit luck than Lee describes... I can not get the short projectiles(in sabots) to shoot consistently at all. The only one that I shoot and it shoots well is a 300 grain - longer projectile. I started shooting 300 XTP's and of course now I am shooting 300 grain Speer Gold dots... They shoot great.... I use a MMPHPH-24 Sabot and 80 grains of T7-3f I really did not think I could shoot those big long 460 Bull Shops from a 1/48 either but man those things are accurate also. The only way to know for sure is to shoot them... Thought I had some targets on file, but can not find them right now if I find one I will post it.... |
RE: barrel twist
sabotloader, now thats interesting the 230gr XTP shot best in my 1-48 TC renagade with the 250 XTP doing reasonable, I got better than I expected and I never even tried the 300gr. Lee

I tried the lighter bullets and never got the consistency that i wanted... with the 300 I can shoot clay pigeons placed around the rock pit all day - one shot - one broken pigeon... What really amazed mewas when i started shooting those even longer 460 bull shops - they are dead nuts accurate... but big and slow.... Another experiance Cdad and i were out shooting in his desert here in the Tri-Cities - i was shoot 500 yards with a 54 Hawken against his White... I hung right in there... |
RE: barrel twist
Tried 350gr cast .458 (45/70 bullets) in MMP orange sabots in my 1-48 NewEnglander this fall and was pleasantly suprised. At 50 yards the first 4 shots produced 1 ragged hole and the 5th shot went about 1/2" high/left. Still a very good group for open sights for me!
About all I can tell you is try a few combinations and see how it does. BTW - the 350gr .458 is a fairly long bullet with a RF (round/flat) nose. |
