RE: Precision rifle dead centers
I don't know if I'd go with the PowerBelt either. To be honest, I've never used them, but I've heard that they can be a bit fragile too. They are designed to function at moderate velocity and some have said they blow up at high velocity resulting in shallow penetration. Again, not what you want with a 500+ pound animal. I'd look at the Barnes ML bullets. The Spitfire TMZ's would fit the bill nicely. You might also consider a conical lead bullet. The Hornady Great Plains conicals are great bullets. The 460gr flat point would do well I think. They don't go very fast, but they hit like a freight train. This bullet is responsible for one of my two bang-flops. I'd still lean toward the Barnes though. Whitetails are a dime a dozen, and just about any bullet will kill them if you hit them right. But I wouldn't trust a once-in-a-lifetime elk hunt to anything other than the best bullet I could find. I think that the Barnes bullets are just about as close to the perfect game bullet as one can get.

I did some research witha localMLspecialist and he said the 300 grain PR bullet was just to light for elk. He recommends powerbelt 405 grainHPlead bullets, changing from #11 percussion to musket percussion, andtwo 50 grain pellets of tripple 7. How much time do you have before you are hunting? If your time is very limited then the switch to the PowerBelt might be the best alternative, but if you have time to develope something the PB would be way down on my list. You can get some 460 conicalsvery quickly from Utah (No Excuse) just callDave and he will send them to you. http://members.aol.com/nebullets/ These would IMO be a much better elk bullet and they should be just right for your GM barrel... I do not like the thought of the mucket cap vs a #11 MAG cap but to ignite a t7 pellet in cold weather that might be what you need. Where are you located in WA... |
RE: Precision rifle dead centers
Located 30 miles south of Seattle, about 600' abovesea level, temp averages high 30's to mid 40's. I have never had any problems with the pyrodex rs and #11 so I really hesitate to make such drastic changes, also I have never shot triple 7 pellets out of my knight or any pellets for that matter. The season is only open until Dec 15 so I need to make somethig happen quick!! Thanks, HF41

Here is what I would suggest and what I would do your situation... Do not change to musket caps Do not change to T7 pellets - If you have been using RS (120 grains will do the job... -stay with the know.. and the #11 Mag (make sure yours are mag caps or even better if you could come up with some Dynamint Nobel 1075+ #11 caps stay with that. (sportsman warehouse). At this late date if you have confidence to shoot the 300 Precision in the right place - stay with it - it will do the job if you get it tucked in behind the shoulder or even in the brisket with a head on shot. Even if you get a solid hit on the shoulder bone it will get into the chest cavity. If there were more time I would send you some 460 Bull Shops ( I livein Moscow/Pullman areaand I have a contact in the Tri Cites area that could get you some - but that would require re-zero and testing - same thing if you went to a 405 Power Belt... Stay with what you have - hopefully keep your shot under a 100 yards - take your time and make a good shot and you will have your elk.. Best of luck to you.... mike |
RE: Precision rifle dead centers
I didn't mention in my first post, but the deer I shot this year was shot straight through the front shoulder with a 220 grain dead center. It retained its weight very well (sorry, don't have a scale). I know an elk and a deer are 2 completely different animals. But, I think the key to the all lead bullet would be to use the largest diameter bullet possible, in this case the .45 that I mentioned previously. Seriously, don't hesitate to call Cecil, he will give you the info. you need. Let us know what you come up with. Thanks, Greg

RE: Precision rifle dead centers
Thanks for the help Sabotloader,
I ordered two boxes of the 50/460's from Dave, needless to say I will be spending some time at the range. As for now, I will stick with what I have and what I know works for the remainder of the season. I appreciate everbody's feedback and I really can't say enough about this site and all that a person can learn here.. Thanks again, HF41. |
