I use a synthetic automotive bearing greese. Bought a tube of it like you put in a greese gun. It is a red color and is not too messy and one tube of it will likely last me a lifetime. Works better for me than the teflon tape which releases, but somewhat tightly.

That TC cleaning tool is kinda cool.... But I've just been using a plastic bristle BP brush with some solvent. Then twist up the sleeve of an old t-shirt or a sock and continue twisting into the threads . Works fine.... There's ALOT of little gadgets out there that I'm sure work good. But I usually improvise as long as it works well.
