Seating the action
I am trying to tighten up my groups and read on a different forum that you can seat your action. Along with free floating your barrel. I already have an idea on how to free float my barrel however don't know how to seat the action or what that reaally means.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. River Rat |

That is interesting, anyone else that might know what this means.

Depending on which bolt action muzzleloader that you have, bedding the action can enhance accuracy and consistency. Some ofthe less expensive bolt action muzzleloaders have very flexible stocks that hinder accuracy. Additionally the hole/s for the action screws can wear out. i have blass bedded, and/orpillar bedded, and floated the barrels of several different brands of bolt action muzzleloaders. Accuracy always improved.
Here is my old CVA Stag Horn. ![]() |

I understand the instructions that come with that kit are very detailed and clear. |
RE: Seating the action
Underclocked.....fancy meeting you here. grins.
I've had my best luck with a full length bed and pillarson a black powderboltgun. From there I look at trigger function, scope mount mechanics, charge weight consistancy and load compression. |
RE: Seating the action
A free floated barrel is like my Black Diamond XR where the barrel technically touches the stock in only the two locking lugs. That's why at the range you must not rest the rifle on the front bag with the barrel. Only with the forearm of the stock.
I think what River Rat is meaning is he wants to bed the rifle. Something I personally have not had the nerve to attempt yet, but will be doing so in the very near future with a couple rifles.. |

RE: Seating the action
I have always used Accu Glass on Center Fire Rifles(also available at Midway). I have done 5 rifles and it is easy to do. I have not done any ML but I may try it. I guess it never entered my mind on a ML.

RE: Seating the action
Dave
I have bedded and free floated several rifle's never atemped a ML just beause I don't think it would make that much difference. I guess I would try to shim to free float before I went to some thing permant . I would do this to make sure it works. As you know evey gun is a law unto itself |
RE: Seating the action
Should add that free floating a ML is an exercise in futility, IMHO.
Barrel harmonics, simply, are not the imposingfactor as with CF's. The key is consistancy in charge weight and load compression, consistancy in barrel condition, finding that bullet or bullet/sabot combo that is pure magic, applyingbetter optics than most deem fit for ML's....and refining those horrible triggers. That said I've made 'em shoot better than factory inlettedwith a full length bed and pillars, having tuned anhonest 3" rifle down to cloverleafs....more than a time or two. Have used everything from cheap two part epoxy, to Devcon Titanium and found the only beddingcriteria to satisfy with a MLis....that it's waterproof. Hornady One Shot, BTW....is a kick azz release agent. |

Wilds, I take it your handle is different elsewhere? Who iz u neway? Whut?

RE: Seating the action
Grins....
That rifle, the one I've been working on for so long, is sooo almost done, wait 'till ya see the checkering. Sweet, if I do say so meself....... |
RE: Seating the action
I would think if you are not "torquing" the stock onto the barrel when assembling the rifle bedding wouldn't be a problem. I think the same would apply if on a traditional rifle the barrel lug does not hold the barrel off the stock or makes you put pressure on the wood to insert the lug. (wedge pin for us traditional guys)
I could see how that would help a loose fitting barrel. Actually quite a bit if done before the wedge pin. |
RE: Seating the action
Lotsa ways to make 'em shoot "good".
A few more ways to make 'em shoot better....... A full length bed is nearing the topof the game....if you ask me. Been known to glass up a traditional on purpose. |
RE: Seating the action
You glass the whole barrel channel?
|
RE: Seating the action
The whole barrel.....
