209 primers
i would like to know why we use different primers in our muzzleloaders ?? i have tried out 5 different primers [only primers] and shot 15 of them each make .[REMINGTON ,CCI,WINCHESTER , ECT.....] and had no CRUDE RING when i removed the breech plug .but as soon as i loaded up with T7 and fired the rifle i got a CRUDE RING .so i believe the 209 primer has nothing to do with the CRUDE RING ..p.s. am i missing something ????

RE: 209 primers
Some get it while others like me dont. I use 80 grains triple 7, 385 great plains bullet and a CCI primer and have never felt the crud ring.

RE: 209 primers
I get the crud ring build up after about the fifth load but very manageable. I too think it is the product of the 777 powder. However, I do believe the 777 primers burn hotter for me and helps with the crud ring.

RE: 209 primers
Acually the T7 primers are thr least hottest of the primers. From what I've read the hotter the primer the more likely a crud ring will form. I have not tried those as ofyet, but I have shot the new remington black powder powder primers with triple 7 and never had any problems. I swabbed the barrel with windex and alcohol after each shot.Even shooting30 rounds produced no crud ring.

RE: 209 primers
i also swabbed the barrel, but with cayugad's formula ,which is cheap and does a perfect job . so i still say the primer has nothing to do with the "CRUDE RING"

I cannot fathom using any of the substitute powders IF one is going to swab between each shot-if you do THAT, you are better off with real BP. The only substitutes that are any good to me are those that permit multiple shots w/o swabbing! I have not used Pyrdex for several years (or any other sub), because I am now concentrating on FLINTLOCKS! |
RE: 209 primers
if i am on the fire range or hunting ,once i find the right powder and bullet i use the same combination every time ..i enjoy taking my time with the muzzleloader and when i hunt deer and it is down on the ground i have lots of time to tag the deer and clean the rifle,....
