Using your ML during rifle season...

How many of you use your ML during regular firearms season? I am just curious, as I plan to use my savage ML during regular firearms season this year.

Muzzleloaders are all I used for the past 15 years, modern or muzzleloader season.

I'm thinking about it since the majority of my shots would be less than 100 yards anyway. Plus I just think it would be cool to take my first deer with a ML and what better way to up the odds than to just keep on carrying it through rifle and dog season?

Most of my hunting is done on military property where high power rifles are not allowed. No, i do not feel under gunned with a muzzleloader.

I am planning to use my savage ML during regular firearms season for a couple of reasons. First I really enjoy shooting it. Two, I like the challenge of having to make one shot count. Third, I actually gain significant distance that I will be able to make a shot; out to 200 yards versus roughly a 100 yards with my 870.

All my ceterfire guns have dust on them. Heck I can't even remember when the last time I fired them.:)

Here in Indiana, we are a no rifle state for deer. We are seeing a lot of folks hanging up the shotgun and switching to inline.

Do not use the centerfires for much of anything these days... been all ML for several years now... not eve nusing the 222 that much for varmints any more - switched to a rim-fire .17 for that and 10mm 200 grain XTP's from a ML for some additional varmint hunting....

It is addictive....

Last time i shot a centerfire was 3 years ago at the target range. Been close to 7 years since i last hunted with a centerfire. Muzzleloaders are my passion.

I gave up centerfire's in 2001. Just bow's and muzzleloaders fer me.

Our "gun" season for deerallows shotguns, muzzleloaders, or archery. All I've used for the past 10 or more years is a muzzleloader. The choice of inline or sidelock depends on location and weather. If shots will probably be less than 100 yards and/or the weather might cause problems with a scope the sidelock gets the call.

You can bet that I'll have my trusty T/C Encore Pro Hunter 209x50 during ANY and ALL firearm hunts I go on!

My state (Ohio) does not allow centerfires. After about 15 years of being smacked around by slug guns, I finally wised up and got a muzzleloader. Difference is day and night. Cheaper to shoot, more accurate, better triggers, less recoil, and the deer are just as dead. Even if I went hunting in a state that permitted centerfires, I would not feel undergunned with my muzzies.

The only time i feel dis-advantaged is when going after a big hog in a thicket with a M/L.i'm getting a Remington type cap and ball revolver for that reason.

In Manitoba you can use a ML during the regular rifle season. There are areas that are bow and ML only and many during rifle do not hunt these areas because they are out with their center fire guns. It's amazing what comes out of the bush in the non-rifle areas during this time. It's like the deer think the season is over and are just walking around stupid esp. in the third week of the regular season (since there is little to no hunting pressure for a couple of weeks). Hey if it is legal in your province or state...give it a try.

I had placed this in another post but just an addition. I usually hunt whitetails during rifle with my 7mm mag but for the last two years I have been taking my ML with me also. In the mornings and evenings I would hunt with the rifle, out of one of my tree stands along some very long tree lines (easy 500 yards). Where the ML comes in handy is during the mid day hours. The 7mm mag does not preform well in thick cover as I walk the bush butmy ML is a real treat. We are able to party hunt in Manitoba so there are always extra tags to fill. Over the last 2 years I've filled 3 tags using this method with my ML during rifle season.

Been using a muzzleloader for regular gun season since 1965, but I take 70% of my deer with a bow or a x-bow. Lee

Last year was my first year using a ML and I got a nice y-horn with my Omega. This year I plan to use the Omega for moose and my Lyman GPR Flintock .50 for deer.

Where I hunt deer and moose (WMU 48 and 15B Ontario Canada) there are no special seasons for ML's. You hunt with all the rest of the centerfires. There are some areas in the province that do have special seasons.
