What should I do???
I am thinking about getting something new. I was going to get a Lyman 54cal flint Trade rifle but DNR sports doese not sell them anymore and they were the only ones with such a good price. I think it was $259.17. For some reason they do not have them anymore and everyone else with a 54cal flint Trade rifle is over priced ($300+).
The other thing I am considering is getting a GM barrel for my TC Renegade. It would probably be a 58cal but maybe a 54cal. I like this idea because I could have a real roundball barrel and if I get the 58cal I would have a whole new caliber to try out. I could also get a flint lock for for my Renegade and put a flint barrel on it. Then I could have flinter. Not sure what I want to do. Any Ideas? I do not want to spend more than about $300. I will also not go smaller then a 54cal. I want a 54cal or 58cal. |

give them a call. They had some flintlocks in a while back. They are still reasonable there but for how long is anyone's guess. If they are out of stock, you can often times still lock in a price with them. This is where I started buying my powder also. |
RE: What should I do???
Schrumans in Clarkston has or last week had, a T/C Big Bore 58 cal on consignment for $350, it looked to be in good condition.
If I had to go strictly roundball I would go big to get some weight in the projetile. |
RE: What should I do???
That is a good deal on a big bore... I agree. If shooting roundball, larger is better for game animals.

RE: What should I do???
give midsouth a call, they show the lyman 54 percusion for $249.00
I remember I called them and ask about the trade rifle in a 54 cal.flinter ,they will have to order it no prblem think it was $269.00 I was lucky to pick up a kit renegade in 54 flinters a few years back. |
RE: What should I do???
Just call Fox Ridge Outfitters all the T/C barrels they sell are under $200. I bet they will find a lock hanging around for you as well.

It only costed about $60 to rifle it. I would still be well withing my limit. Remember, I am hunting the Colorado rocky mountains with whatever I get. I am leaning toward a barrel. Do you think I should CONSIDER a 62cal or just go with the 58cal? |
RE: What should I do???
While a .62 caliber with the right rifling might be nice, I would probably just go with a .58 caliber. After all you are going to be shooting roundball. You are going to get as close as possible. You are going to be careful in shot placement. 284 VS 324 weight difference, and then the difference in diameter. A .58 is a big ball. If that expands at all, think of the hole that will be knocking through the animal.
Now I have to admit, if they offered the .62 in a rifled barrel I would get one of them, just for the thrill of shooting it and owning it, but that .58 is a good caliber. The early mountain men in the Rockies were happy if they had a simple .50 caliber Hawkins. They would have been thrilled to death to get a .58. |
RE: What should I do???
Seems to me the .58 stuff would be a bunch easier to find compared to a .62.

My renegade flinter 54 cal shoots a stiff load 95 grains of goex 3F hornady RB 230 grain on a good day from the bench can put 3 shots all touching at the 100 yd target. I think the 54 may have a distance edge over the big 58 cal.but up close the 58 has to pack a hard hitting ball. |

RE: What should I do???
Lonewolf.. whether its a great photograph (which it is) or what, but that has to be one of the best looking Renegades I have seen. I sure like that model rifle as you are aware, but I do not own one in a flintlock. If I got my hands on a lock in flintlock style, would that fit in one of my percussion style rifle stocks? If it did, then I could get a .54 GMB flintlock barrel and have one of them. There are some after market locks out there if they would fit.

RE: What should I do???
Cayugad, I think you can just get a TC flint lock and it will fit right on. Do you own a TC Hawken flinter? If so put that lock on the Renegade. It should work.

RE: What should I do???
Dave: I have swap locks (flint) on many of my side locks,I can truly say the early t/c locks (Flint) from the 70's are a tad bit larger then the newer ones.
I also seen some fitting is required on stocks that came from the factory as percussion. I love the PA HUNTER STOCK I now have 2 of them one is the newer 45 cal. flinter and the other was a early hawkens flinter also. That renegade you are looking at I must have it now around 4 years was real lucky to buy it from a guy that never completed it and was sitting in a basement for some 30 plus years.I did all the wood and metal work on it and used LMF to turn the parts brown |

RE: What should I do???
I will bet that auction on the stock and lock will go for about $175.00 or more .

RE: What should I do???
I wonder if this lock would work to put on my Renegade?

RE: What should I do???
I would think so: all is needed is to return the hammer to t/c for the new style and add a lyman frizzen
|
RE: What should I do???
Why the Lyman frizzen?
It would be really cool to get the Hawken 58cal flint barrel fromFoxridge since it will fit the Renegade and you are ready to roll! A 58cal flintlock would be sweet! It is the last Hawken Barrel before the NE barrels. http://www.foxridgeoutfitters.com/detail.cfm?section=16&subsection=149,173&p roduct=4356 |
RE: What should I do???
check above the item on e bay there is a lock that ends in 4 hours also t/c flinter from a hawkens ,both are the same lock
t/c only makes 2 sizes lock large and small, both locks hawkens and renegade are the same size. I like the lyman frizzens over t/c frizzens,I have one lyman frizzen on my 50 cal. flinter must have over 500 rounds threw it and still sparks like new The only problem to fit a lyman frizzen to a t/c lock you will have to do some filing otherwise no major task I have 3 flinters all are t/c from 45,50 and 54 cal. did think on a 58 cal. but but I have no need for one. I think my 54 cal. will stop anything that walks on 4 legs and from what I see and know the best barrel are the ones with no model on them, early serial numbers are the best and will tack drive round balls with heavy charges. I like barrels with 4 to 5 digits in serial numbers even a K in the serial number makes no difference all are tack drivers. |
