Target challenge

How would you guys feel about an online shooting challenge? Maybe several categories to inclued as many participants as reasonable. Something fairly simple. Honor system and photos type event. The prize could be personal pride; or maybe a surprise prize. A chance to get the competitive juices flowing and see what these weapons can print.

Has anything like this been floated before?

Good idea? Bad idea? Interested?

It's tough to do we have had these shoots over on the MLF and the main problem is many people can't shoot at will and need to go to camp or a friends to shoot so they can't make the deadlines. (Me included) I must say though I enjoy the competition anyway and really like the frendly shooting banter you read.

You would be surprized how honest people are in these events. I guess the fact that you are shooting against yourself and annomous friends makes people more honest.

What you would need to do it right is to have a volenteer to send the targets to and have the scoring done blind. Then post the winners with pics of the targets for everyone to see.

What would be most interesting is if everyone had to "pay" to enter to competition with either a box of caps or primers some bullets , flints just so in the end we have a blanket of prizes with the winner picking the first half of them. Second place getting some and so on down the line.

Sounds fun, but do agree with you keep it as simple as possible...

I am not a real competitive person but i would still enter a target one with conicals, one with sabots, and Sharp Shooter would want patched round balls also... even from multiple guns...

RE: Target challenge

Pittsburgh - I'd want to avoid handling targets. Maybe measure groups from nearest edges of holes farthest apart rather than determine centers, and submit photos.

One difficulty would be the standardization of target face used.

Sabotloader - what is the name of the red diamond targets you post? Are they a standard? Maybe all that's needed is a target face with 1" grid pattern.

First Event: two categories: open sights and scoped

Projectile: all lead

Distance: 100 yds.

Best five shot group

Target photos due by April 1

No limit to number of targets submitted.

Maximum 5 holes in a target, no reused targets

All targets must show:

Shooter's internet name
Date shot
Distance to target
Powder and grains
description of lead projectile
distance between nearest edges of farthest holes
gun description
category - scoped or open sight

We could then do another for May 1 using Sabots.

Assuming there's an interest.

Comments? Suggestions?

A simple target everyone can make is a 3"x5" index card. Take a magic marker and a straight edge and draw an X corner to corner. Then shoot for the center. That way no one needs a printer to make the target. Also distances have to be considered because some people do not have access to the longer distances. You could have a;

25 yard bench shoot
25 yard free standing shoot
50 yard bench shoot
50 yard free standing shoot
75 yard bench shoot
75 yard free standing shoot
etc...

Then you could break it down to scoped rifles and open sights. Whether you want to restrict and go peep sights, fiber optic, etc would be up to the group as a whole. Then you need to decide how many shots are you going to want put at each target.

Personally, I'd just as soon shoot and have fun without the need to better someone else, but then it could be a real eye opener.

Here is a link to free on line targets. Lots of targets. http://www.targetz.com/

The DWB's have had a few postal shoots, it's fun, but the partisipation is usually low, still fun.
