Primer Residue Help
I trying to clean my dad’s Optima and there seems to be more black residue behind the breech plug than I remember. I have tried everything I have, Shooters Choice, Powder Blast, #13 Bore Cleaner, Break Free, Advanced shooters Solvent but nothing seem to work except scraping with a knife. Even a brass brush on a drill does very little. I think this is primer residue. Anybody got any tricks?

What primers are you using? i found cci's to be the cleanest when it comes to blowback.
Try some glass cleaner to get it off, i sometimes have to scrape the fouling out of my flintlock, lock,with a screw driver too buti guess thats something flintlock shooters have to live with. After you get that stuff off, put a thin coat of oil in that area and you can just spray and wipe the fouling away next time. I use to use 3in1 oil on my renegade and coat the sidelock, rear part of the barrel and stock with it to make the fouling wipe off easily.

Could it be rust? If so, you may want to try brake fluid. If it doesn't loosen up easily with that, let it sit overnight, then hit it with steel wool. Don't get it on anything but the steel.

Get out theWindex with vinegar. This is the clear stuff.Or you can mix white vinegar with water. i use it in a small spray bottle. Just spray it on and it dissolves the crud. Sometimes you can see it fizz. It works because the crud is residue from the powder and primer which are botha bases.

Lime away might do it-never tried it myself. Mike Venturino, blackpowder editor for Shooting Times magazine, usesWindex with vinegar for all his blackpowder cleaning. Got onto it myself about five years ago. In a apray bottle or ona wettedpatch it gets the crud off the scope, the breech plug, receiverand out of the bore. It also works very fast, softening and washing away the crud.
