RE: Best Group U saw
None of these are the best I've seen/or shot. Some of you saw my 1/4" 3 shot group ... which I BLEW by nervously trying two more.
![]() ![]() None of the bullets used in these groups are mass production. (The plain targets that Ed Mehlig uses in the pic above have 1/2" squares. Most of his targets shown there were fired using bullets made by Bob Bowers and myself - he was conducting a shoot-off for us. :) I don't know which of us won.) Hunterman makes custom bullets that do quite well but his are made to fill eachorder. My 5/8" group up there was fired with bullets made from a cheap LEE mold and pan lubed. These Whites are amazingly accurate - my 98 is boringly accurate. Believe the UltraMag will be just the same and hope the little Whitetail model I just recently acquired will be also. There are lots of MOA rifles out there. New White Whitetail shown below ![]() |

Great group. I am confident that 500 would do a nice job on any deer you shoot. The nice thing here in MD is that you can take 2 bucks and 10 does during the ML season. It is a great area to test rounds while gather great tasting table fare.As far as groups go I am sure my guns can shoot better than I can hold them. I can always get two great shot its always the third or 5th on 5 shot groups that get me. I think age has something to do with it. |
RE: Best Group U saw
While I don't have a picture I did something last week that I'm not sure I could repeat. While sighting in at 100 yards formy hunt this past week I shot a 300SW pushed by 130gr of Pyro pellets from a clean barrel that impacted just right of center. The second shot I took without swabbing. The target frame is about 30x36 but I could only find 1 hole in the target after the second shot. I knew I hadn't pulled the shot so my conclusion was that it must have gone thru the same hole, but it did not appear to be enlargened. I checked myself by aiming at a different target dot and the shot impacted in basically the same point as the first shot in relation to the dot. Thats the first time I've ever had that happen. I've shot quite a few sub MOA groups with 348 PowerBelts and many more MOA groups with other bullets but I don't recall ever having a bullet go through the same hole and not make it larger. I must of been having a really good day.

RE: Best Group U saw
So far this is the best group I have shot with the savage at 300 yds, have shot several at moa and less but this one is the tighest. The second group is with a encore 50 cal,I let my younger brother have the encore this summer and his first shot group looked about the same at 100 yds.
I took 2 deer with the savage this year one at 170 yds and one at 230 yds.Brother wasn't so lucky he said he didn't even see a deer during the muzzleloader season. All the groups were shot off the bench. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v312/owensby/sav300yds50cal.jpg?t=1166210795 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v312/owensby/encore-22.jpg?t=1166210910 |
RE: Best Group U saw
This is about my best so far in the last few days I've been shooting. It's a load of 90gr. by volume of APP/FFG, a home brewed Keith style SWC in TC green sabots and a CCI209 primer at 100yds. out of my .50 cal Omega.
Only later did I learn where shotshell 209's are less accurate normally, based on their higher pressures, and aren't preferred in most ML situations regarding accuracy.......I guess nobody said anything soon enough. The shot to the left was ALL me....I rode up on the stock too much and tossed it to the side when the gun fired. Anyway, the Pyrodex Select did way better and was stitching them into a knot hole, but as luck would have it, I tossed one. I'd of still taken a photo, but the wife absconded with my digital for some baby shower or something, and I said to hell with it and kept shooting. Nice groups guys.....good shootin' Take care, Bob ![]() |

RE: Best Group U saw
Thank you kindly sir.........after looking at yours in your last post, that compliment means something.....I think the Pyro Select is working better for me though, so I'll keep trying for better if the wind ever dies down. That group in the photo was shot in a slight gusty crosswind. I'm sure that was why they walked from left to right, except for the flier. Like I said, that one was all me.Bob
